LA Galaxy Acquire Midfielder Edwin Cerrillo from FC Dallas
August 3, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
LA Galaxy News Release
LOS ANGELES - The LA Galaxy today announced that the club has acquired midfielder Edwin Cerrillo from FC Dallas in exchange for $200,000 in 2023 General Allocation Money (GAM). The trade between the Galaxy and FC Dallas was completed prior to the close of MLS' Secondary Transfer Window. Dallas could receive up to $400,000 in conditional GAM if certain performance metrics are met by Cerrillo. Additionally, Dallas would receive a percentage of a future transfer fee if Cerrillo is moved outside of MLS or within the league.
Cerrillo, 22, tallied four assists in 96 appearances (67 starts) across all competitions in five seasons played for FC Dallas (2019-23). In 19 appearances (15 starts) for FC Dallas during the 2023 MLS Regular Season, the Waco, Texas, native recorded two assists, led Dallas with 122 possessions won and ranked second on the club with 776 completed passes (87.5% pass accuracy).
"We are pleased to announce Edwin's addition to the club. Edwin is a talented defensive midfielder who has already played over 100 professional games by the age of 22," said LA Galaxy Head Coach and Sporting Director Greg Vanney. "His education in the position and quality with and without the ball will help him quickly integrate into the group."
The 24th Homegrown Player signing in FC Dallas history logged 1,892 minutes played in 32 appearances (20 starts) for Dallas during the 2022 MLS Regular Season. The previous year, Cerrillo recorded one assist in 22 regular-season appearances (16 starts) across 1,390 minutes played during the 2021 campaign. In his first season as a professional, Cerrillo tallied one assist in 12 regular-season appearances (11 starts) across 918 minutes played for FC Dallas in 2019. Additionally, Cerrillo recorded one goal and two assists in 15 career appearances (15 starts) across all competitions for FC Dallas' MLS NEXT Pro affiliate North Texas SC, helping the club win the 2019 USL League 1 Championship and the 2019 Regular Season title.
At the youth international level, Cerrillo has appeared for the United States at the U-23 and U-20 age groups, and was notably named to the USMYNT roster that competed at the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland.
