
LA Galaxy Acquire Defender Tony Alfaro from New York City FC in Exchange for $125,000 in 2023 General Allocation Money

LOS ANGELES - The LA Galaxy today announced that the club has acquired defender Tony Alfaro from New York City FC in exchange for $125,000 in 2023 General Allocation Money (GAM). NYCFC could receive up to an additional $375,000 in GAM if certain performance metrics are met by Alfaro in 2023 and 2024. Additionally, the Galaxy opened up a roster slot by placing defender Martín Cáceres on the Injured List.

"Tony's qualities as a player, his experience within MLS and his flexibility to play different roles along the backline will be an important addition to our team. We look forward to quickly integrating him into the group."
Alfaro, 30, joins the Galaxy having made 74 career regular-season appearances (46 starts) and recording one goal and two assists across six seasons played (2016-18, 2021-Present) in MLS. In three seasons played for Sounders FC (2016-18), after being drafted by Seattle with the 27th overall pick in the second round of the 2016 MLS SuperDraft out of California State University, Dominguez Hills, Alfaro made 25 regular-season appearances (12 starts) and won the 2016 MLS Cup.
In 2019, Alfaro joined Liga MX side Club Deportivo Guadalajara, where he made three appearances (2 starts) across all competitions. While with Chivas, the defender went on loan with Ascenso MX side Club Atlético Zacatepec during the 2019 campaign, making 14 appearances (11 starts) across all competitions. The following season, Alfaro joined USL Championship side Reno 1868 FC, where he made 11 appearances (7 starts) across all competitions during the 2020 season.
The Michoacán, Mexico, native spent two seasons with D.C. United (2021-22), where he tallied one goal and two assists in 43 regular-season appearances (30 starts). Most recently, Alfaro made six league appearances (4 starts) in 376 minutes played for NYCFC during the 2023 campaign.
