Komets streak to five straight wins

Fort Wayne, IN --- The Komets swept all 4 games played for the week to extend their winning streak to 5 games. Fort Wayne gained 8 points in the UHL’s Western Conference and improved to 15-7-1. The Komets enter week 9 of the 2004-05 campaign trailing first-place Rockford by a slim 2-point margin.

Wednesday the Komets corralled the conference rival IceHogs in Rockford 5-0 in the first of 2 shutouts for the week. Goaltender Kevin St. Pierre earned his first shutout of the season stopping 38 Rockford shots. It was the veteran netminder’s 12th UHL shutout and the 21st of his career. Chris Grenville notched a pair for the 3rd time this season while Dan Stewart, Troy Neumeier and Sean Venedam each added markers.

Friday the Komets wrenched the Mechanics in Motor City 7-1 in the first ever meeting between the two teams. Stewart registered his first 2-goal outing of the season. Adding tallies were David Hukalo, Colin Chaulk, P.C. Drouin, Steve Rodberg and Venedam. Defenseman Jason Kean passed a pair of helpers and goalie St. Pierre registered the win making 30 saves.

The Komets traveled to Muskegon Saturday night and upended the defending Colonial Cup Champs 1-0 in a shootout for the second shutout of the week and 4th straight win over the Fury this season. Goaltender Tyler Masters stopped 24 shots in regulation for his first pro shutout. After a scoreless game in regulation, Komets Rodberg and Chaulk each scored in the extra frame for the win.

Sunday the Komets returned to Fort Wayne and doubled-up the visiting Flint Generals 6-3 for the Komet’s 5th straight home win. Rookie defenseman Kean registered his first pro 5-point game scoring a goal and adding 4 assists. Kean’s 5 points ties the record of points scored in a UHL game by a Komet. Rookie Jonathan Goodwin registered his first pro 2-goal performance and added an assist for a 3-point night. Tom Nemeth, Tom Nelson and Venedam each contributed goals in the win and goaltender St. Pierre registered his 7th straight win stopping 26 of 29 Flint shots.

This week the Komets have another 4 games slated. Tuesday the Komets are in Kansas City for an 8pm (Fort Wayne time) faceoff against the Outlaws. This game was originally scheduled for a noon start as part of a team promotion in Kansas City but was later changed to an 8pm (Fort Wayne time) start. Friday the Komets begin another 3-game weekend hosting the Motor City Mechanics for the first time at 8pm. Saturday the Komets travel to Missouri to face the River Otters at 8:05pm (Fort Wayne time). Sunday the Komets return to Fort Wayne to skate against the Elmira Jackals at 5pm.
