Komets stop Thunder 6-4, remain unbeaten at home

Fort Wayne, IN - The defending Turner Cup Champion Fort Wayne Komets took a split of two games played last week to continue on top of the IHL after four weeks of play.

In review of last week's action, the Komets suffered a 6-4 setback at Muskegon Friday night allowing the Lumberjacks a two-point gain on the Komets for the top spot in the IHL. Saturday the Komets returned home to stop the Thunder from Bloomington 6-4 and remain unbeaten at home in three appearances so far.

Entering week five the Komets share the top spot in the IHL with Muskegon. Both teams have identical records of 6-2-0-0 for 12 points.

For the first time this season, the Komets will skate three games in three nights starting Thursday in Flint with a 7pm faceoff at Perani Arena. The Generals have scheduled many Thursday night home games this season and this will be the first of two for the Komets. The third-place Generals are three points behind the first-place Komets and are coming off a 5-2 loss at Muskegon Saturday. Thursday night's match is the second of 16 meetings after the Generals were ambushed 11-3 by the Komets in the Fort Wayne home opener Oct. 18.

Friday the Komets return to Fort Wayne to host the Muskegon Lumberjacks at 8pm for a battle of the two top teams in the IHL. The Komets remain undefeated on home ice (3-0-0) and have a chance to avenge last Friday night's 6-4 loss at Muskegon. Friday night's tilt is the second of 15 meetings and first of eight visits by the Lumberjacks this season. Muskegon is riding a three-game winning streak. The 'Jacks are idle this week until they travel to Fort Wayne Friday.

Saturday the Komets compete the week with a 7:30pm faceoff at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo. It's the second of eight visits to Kalamazoo and the third of 16 meetings. The Komets upended the Wings 5-1 in the last meeting on Halloween night in Fort Wayne. The Wings were shut out at Port Huron their last time out 5-0 for a two-game losing skid and are 2-3-0 in their last five games.

Komets leading the I: Center Mathieu Curadeau has an IHL high nine goals (four-way tie). Left wing P.C. Drouin has a league best two game winning goals (four-way tie). Center Rick Varone leads rookies with six goals, seven assists and 13 points along with a +10. Guy Dupuis leads defensemen with four goals and 12 points. The Komets lead with 45 goals and have allowed a league-lowest 26 goals. The Komets attracted a crowd of 9,464 Saturday night and lead all minor league pro hockey in America in attendance with a per-game average of 9,115 after three home games.

Komet streaks.....Colin Chaulk has registered points in each game he has appeared. After missing two games due to the flu, the veteran center extended his personal point-scoring streak to six games (3 goals, 13 assists) scoring three assists in Saturday night's 6-4 home win over Bloomington in his return to action. Winger David Hukalo has a seven-point scoring streak (3 goals, 8 assists) and center Mathieu Curadeau pointed in each game played for the week for a four-game point streak (3 goals, 5 assists). Also, the Komets' 6-4 home win Saturday night over the Thunder pushed their undefeated home streak to three games.

Points in seven of the first eight out of the gate.....winger Konstantin Shafranov (assists in each of seven games), winger David Hukalo (assists in each of six games), center Rick Varone and center Mathieu Curadeau have each tallied points in seven of the eight games played so far this season for fast starts to 2008-09.

Special K's.....the Komets own the leading IHL power play with a 26.1% rating scoring 12 goals with the man advantage in 46 chances. Saturday the Komets netted their first home power play goals of the season scoring twcie with the extra attacker. The Komets also have a league-high three short-handed tallies (all scored on the road) and have yet to allow a short-handed goal.
