Komets Quest For Third Straight Cup Starts Thursday

Fort Wayne, IN - The Komets completed the regular season with two wins and a shootout loss to cap the 2009-10 campaign with an eight-game unbeaten streak (7-0-0-1) and seven-game home winning streak. The Komets finished the season with a 50-21-1-4 record and 105 points. Fort Wayne reached 100 points or the fourth straight year and 15th time in the 58-year history of the franchise. The Komets reached 50 wins for the ninth time overall and fifth time in the last seven seasons.

About last week The Komets started the final week of the regular season schedule with a 4-3 shootout loss at Quad City Friday. The K's turned the tables on the Mallards Saturday in Fort Wayne with a 2-1 shootout win. Sunday the Komets treated a Fort Wayne crowd of 10,480 to it's seventh straight home win dropping the visiting Flint Generals 2-1. The home sell-out boosted the Komets per-game attendance average for the year to 7,825 for a new Fort Wayne franchise regular season record.

Quest for the Cup The Komets finished two points behind first-place Muskegon and will be the number two seed in the playoffs. The Komets will have home-ice advantage when they face the Port Huron Icehawks in the first round best-of-seven series which will follow a 1-1-1-1-1-1-1 format. The winner of the Fort Wayne-Port Huron series will face the winner of the Muskegon-Flint series for the Turner Cup Championship.

The Komets' defense of back-to-back championships will begin Thursday at 7:30pm at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne. Game two will be at McMorran Arena in Port Huron Saturday at 7:30pm. Game three will be held in Fort Wayne Sunday at 6pm. Game four is slated for Port Huron Wednesday, April 28 at 7pm. If necessary game five will faceoff at 8pm Friday, April 30 in Fort Wayne and game six will be at Port Huron Saturday, May 1 at 7:30pm. If a seventh game is needed it will be held in Fort Wayne Monday, May 3 at 7:30pm.

The Komets will be aiming for their eighth league championship in the 58-year history of the Fort Wayne franchise and their unprecedented third straight. The defending Turner Cup champion Komets will be making their 50th post-season appearance since the the Fort Wayne franchise began in 1952.

The Komets won the regular season series 6-5-0-0 after winning the last three straight meetings while the Icehawks were 5-6-0-0 against Fort Wayne.

The last time Fort Wayne and Port Huron met in post-season action was the 2008 IHL finals when the Komets won the championship series four games to three.
