Brampton Beast News Release
BRAMPTON, ONTARIO - The energy was electric inside the Powerade Centre for the Brampton Beast's second School Day game of the season but the Fort Wayne Komets struck three times in the opening frame and added singles in the second and third period en route to a 5-2 win over the Brampton Beast at the Powerade Centre on Tuesday afternoon.
Close to 5,000 screaming school children from across Peel Region were on hand at the Powerade Centre on Tuesday morning to help cheer on the Beast. The Komets' Mike Embach (1G, 3A) and Shawn Szydlowski (4A) led the way offensively for the Komets with four points each, while Luc-Olivier Blain and Steven Kaunisto scored the goals for the Beast.
It didn't take long for the Komets to jump out to a significant lead as Trevor Cheek, Mike Embach and Brett Perlini each netted a goal by the 6:23 mark of the opening period, giving Fort Wayne the early 3-0 edge.
The rough start to the game saw an early exit for Beast starting goaltender Jordan Ruby, who allowed three goals on six shots against.
Drew Fielding entered the game in relief and helped to spark the Beast to a late first period rally. Luc-Olivier Blain picked up a puck that bounced off the back wall and roofed it over the glove hand of Komets starter Pat Nagle with just 19 seconds remaining in the opening period, giving the fans in attendance some hope for a Beast comeback as the club cut the Komets lead to 3-1 heading into the second period.
Komets defenseman Cody Sol pushed the visitor's lead back to three as he pounced on a loose puck in the high slot and sent a rocket of a slap shot over the glove of Fielding for a shorthanded goal at 11:39 of the second period.
The Beast were flying in the second period and outshot the Komets 11-3 in the frame but Nagle was up to the task and helped his club maintain the 4-1 lead heading into the final period of play.
Perlini's second of the game on the power play pushed the Komets lead to 5-1 by the 2:48 mark of the third period, but the Beast didn't give up easily.
Brampton's tenacity paid off in the final minute of the game when Kaunisto saw some room between Nagle's pads and sent a quick shot through the goaltender's five hole with 25 seconds remaining in the game, but it was too little too late as the Komets held on for the victory.
Nagle earned the win between the pipes for the Komets with a 25-save performance. Fielding stood tall in relief of Ruby and stopped 17 of the 19 shots he faced.
Notes: The Beast finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill. Jeremie Blain returned to the Beast lineup for the first time since January 2 and recorded four shots on goal. Molson Three Stars: 3) Shawn Szydlowski 2) Luc-Olivier Blain 1) Mike Embach.
The Beast will now hit the road for a pair of games in the Southern United States as they face the South Carolina Stingrays on Friday, February 5 and the Atlanta Gladiators on Saturday, February 6. The Beast then return home for a 7:15 PM game against the Toledo Walleye on Friday, February 12. Single game tickets are now available, starting at $16.25.
