Toledo Walleye News Release
Walleye Notes
Walleye take seven of eight during home stand: Toledo took all three games this past weekend to post a near perfect home stand (7-1-0-0). Friday night saw Jake Paterson pick up his first professional shutout with 28 saves as the Walleye collected a 4-0 win over Brampton. The game of the weekend was Saturday night as it came down to a Josh Shalla goal with only 2:20 left in the third period for the Walleye to beat the Fort Wayne Komets 2-1. Toledo raced out to an early 2-0 lead Sunday against Quad City but needed an A.J. Jenks goal 54 seconds into overtime to outlast the Mallards 3-2.
Big time crowds: Saturday and Sunday saw standing room only crowds inside the Huntington Center and the Walleye are just one sellout short of the single season record (12, reached multiple times). Every Saturday night home tilt has seen a standing room crowd this year (eight total). Toledo is averaging 7,055 per game (94.9% capacity) which is second-most in the ECHL to Fort Wayne (7,439).
Rankin is the new goal king: The first period goal for Evan Rankin Friday night set a new Walleye record for goals with 70. Going into the night, he was tied with Kyle Rogers (inducted Saturday into the Toledo Hockey Hall of Fame) for the most career goals with 69. Rankin's second period goal that night pushed his total to 71 and he has 11 points (6G, 5A) in 10 games with Toledo this year. Rankin ranks second to Rogers (108) in career assists with 71 and points (177) with 141.
A cut above the rest: Jeff Lerg secured his seventh consecutive win Saturday night which ties the Walleye record for wins in a row by a goaltender. Lerg also hit that mark last year from December 30, 2014 through January 31, 2015. Lerg is second in the league in wins (19), goals against average (1.86) and leads the ECHL in save percentage at .935. He has won 16 of his last 18 starts.
Tying the consecutive game point record: Shane Berschbach and A.J. Jenks have each equaled the Walleye for consecutive games with at least one point with ten game streaks. The Walleye record for the longest such streak was set first by Anthony Luciani from October 18 through November 16, 2014. Berschbach's streak came to a close on Saturday halted at 10 straight while Jenks was able to push his to ten games with a point in all three games this weekend.
A weekend in Kalamazoo: The Walleye head to Kalamazoo for back to back games this weekend starting Friday night. It is Hockey Heritage Weekend for the ECHL featuring a look into the past Friday and future on Saturday. Toledo has a record of 2-0-1 this year against the KWings. Saturday's game will be televised live on BCSN.
