Komets Add Defenseman Maione; Southorn Returns

Fort Wayne, IN --- The Komets announced Thursday that rookie defenseman Matthew Maione has agreed to terms and has been added to the Fort Wayne roster. The Toronto, Ontario native has recently completed four seasons with the University of Prince Edward Island in the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) conference of the Canadien Interuniversity Sport (CIS). Maione posted a PEI team high 16 assists and +7 while leading Panther defenseman with 19 points in 28 games this year.

Maione (may-OWN), 23, also represented PEI and AUS at the 2013 International University Sports Federation Games in Italy, scoring the game winning goal in the gold medal match as Team Canada defeated Kazakhstan 6-2. Maione is practicing with the Komets and may be in the lineup when the Komets skate a pair of games at Kalamazoo this weekend.

Southorn returns -- The Komets also learned Thursday that defenseman Jordon Southorn has been released from his professional tryout contract with Hamilton of the AHL and will rejoin the Komets in time for this weekend's games at Kalamazoo. Southorn, who didn't see game action during his call up with the Bulldogs, leads Fort Wayne defensemen with nine goals and has 14 assists for 23 points in 39 appearances. The fourth-year pro had points in seven of his last 11 games with the Komets (4 goals, 4 assists) prior to his call up to Hamilton Feb. 27.

Komets head to West Michigan for weekend double-header -- The Komets will face the Wings at Kalamazoo Saturday at 7:30pm (WOWO AM 1190 & FM 92.3; MyTV) and again Sunday at 3pm (WOWO). The Wings will host South Carolina Friday night before welcoming the Komets for games at Wings Stadium Saturday and Sunday.

Squeeze play -- 17 games remain in the regular season slate for the Komets heading into this weekend's play. The top eight teams in the Eastern Conference quality for the playoffs. While Fort Wayne is tied with Florida and one point ahead of Evansville and Wheeling in the battle for the final two playoff positions, the Komets are only six points behind third place Kalamazoo with a chance to gain ground this weekend. 12 points separate the Komets from first-place South Carolina.

Next Komet home game -- The Komets return home Friday, March 14 and Saturday, March 15, when they open a two-game home stand against conference rival Florida. The Komets will be wearing green jerseys in honor of the St. Patrick's Day weekend. The special game-worn jerseys will be raffled off during the game Saturday.
