Knights use five pitchers, pick up win over Richmond 4-3
June 6, 2006 - International League (IL1)
Charlotte Knights News Release
A two out solo home run in the ninth inning by Richmond's Cesar Crespo cut the Knights lead to just one run, however it was too little too late for the Braves as Charlotte reliever Javier Lopez came in and got the final out of the game just one batter later.
Charlotte starter Charlie Haeger's first inning looked a lot like his patented knuckleball. Haeger was up, down and directly over the plate. He gave up two singles, a fielder's choice, walked a batter, gave up a run and struck out two. Luckily enough for Charlotte fans the first inning was not a sign to come for Haeger as he did not allow another hit until the fifth inning.
Richmond drew first blood for the second straight night in the top of the first, but this time the Knights responded in a big way. After a pair of singles to lead off the bottom of the second inning, Charlotte third baseman, Tim Hummel, went deep over the right field wall for his fourth home run of the season. Hummel's blast was also the Knights fifth three-run home run on the year which gave them the early 3-1 lead.
Charlotte plated another run in the fourth after a pair of one out singles and a fielders choice allowed Damian Rolls to slide across home plate and extend the Knights led to 4-1.
Haeger ran into some trouble in the fifth after walking a pair of batters and allowing a single into the outfield that allowed a Richmond runner to score and cut the lead to just two runs. However the Braves could not capitalize with runners on base and the rally was short lived.
Charlotte reliever Nate Cornejo saw his first action on the Knights mound this season replacing the starter Haeger in the sixth inning. Cornejo has been on the disabled list for the majority of the season but showed no sign of rust striking out three in just one and one-third innings of work.
The pair Boone Logan and Jeff Farnsworth was on track to close out the game for the Knights until the late home run by Richmond prompted Charlotte manager Razor Shines to make one last call to the bullpen for the veteran left-hander in Javier Lopez. Lopez struck out the final batter and was credited with his ninth save of the year.
Knights will play game three against Richmond tomorrow at Knights Stadium with first pitch slated for 7:15 p.m.
