FORT MILL, S.C. - May 10, 2007 - The Charlotte Knights had a number of milestones in this young season Thursday night in their 12-1 win against Richmond: most home runs in an inning (2), 1st grand slam of the season, runs scored in a game (12) and series won at home (3-1).
For the second straight night, Knights catcher Wiki Gonzalez did most of the damage to the Braves at the plate. With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 4th and the bases loaded, Gonzalez hit his third home run in two days with a grand slam to give the Knights a 4-1 lead. Gonzalez had 5 RBI on the night, giving him 10 in his last two games. Four batters latter, 3B Josh Fields hit a two run shot to make it 7-1. Fields had 4 RBI on the night. DH Ernie Young struck the final blow, by adding a two-run HR in the 8th making the score 12-1.
Charlotte has scored 21 runs in their last two games.
Carlos Vasquez (1-0, 0.00) picked up his first win of the season with the Knights, giving up one hit in 2 innings of work. Jonathan Johnson (1-1, 5.10) took the loss for the Braves.
The Knights begin a four-game series with the Norfolk Tides on Friday. RHP Lance Broadway (0-1, 3.04) will start for the Knights. The Tides will go with RHP Rob Bell (1-0, 1.64) on the mound. Game time is 7:15 p.m.
