Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- Right-hander Ty Taubenheim allowed just two runs over seven innings and Syracuse scored five times in its first two at-bats en route to a 6-4 win over Indianapolis in front of 12,109 Thursday afternoon at Victory Field.
The Chiefs improve to 14-18 overall and 5-11 on the road with the four-game series split, while the Indians fall to 19-13 overall and 9-9 at home. Indianapolis continues to lead the International League's West Division despite the setback.
Taubenheim (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO) recorded his third quality start in six outings and improved to 2-2 on the year. He hurled six consecutive shutout frames after Indianapolis scored twice in the first.
Syracuse cracked the scoreboard with three runs in the first. DH Chad Mottola (2-for-5, 2 RBI) brought home RF Wayne Lydon (2-for-4, 1 R) and 2B Russ Adams (1-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) with a two-run single through the left side. 3B John Hattig then invited 1B Kevin Barker to the dish with a base knock to up the middle.
Indianapolis trimmed the deficit with two runs in its first at-bat. CF Nyjer Morgan (1-for-5, 2 R) singled to left and eventually scored on LF Rajai Davis' (3-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI) base knock to left. Davis came plateward moments later on C Humberto Cota's groundout to the pitcher.
The Chiefs increased their advantage with two runs in the second and one in the sixth. The Indians pushed across their final runs of the day in the eighth and ninth.
Syracuse RHP Blaine Neal (1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 SO) came on in the final frame to pick up his first save of the campaign.
Indianapolis RHP Bryan Bullington (5.0 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO) suffered his first loss of the year. The former Ball State star and No. 1 overall pick, who is now 5-1 with a 1.90 ERA, had recorded four straight quality starts, including back-to-back, seven-inning shutout performances on April 30 and May 5.
Morgan stole his International League-leading 20th base, while Davis swiped his 18th and 19th bags. The duo currently ranks as the top stolen base tandem in all of professional baseball. The Tribe continues to pace all of Triple-A Baseball in that department, now with 60 thefts on the season.
Indianapolis continues its 10-game homestand with a four-game series against Ottawa. The Indians and Lynx square off in 7 p.m. games on Friday and Saturday, a 2 p.m. affair on Sunday and an 11 a.m. tilt on Monday.
Indianapolis LHP Shane Youman is scheduled to face Ottawa RHP Zack Segovia in the series opener. It will be the first Friday Night Fireworks show of 2007, and Bullington will be honored as the Tribe's April Player of the Month before the game.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
