Westchester Knicks News Release

WHITE PLAINS, January 2, 2015 - It looked like the Westchester Knicks (6-12) would hand the Maine Red Claws (14-3) their fourth loss of the season, but Red Claws guard Tim Frazier had different plans. Frazier stunned the crowd at the Westchester County Center with just seconds on the clock with a lay-up to push Maine over the edge, beating the Knicks 99-98.

Westchester held the league-leading Maine Red Claws from scoring for the first two minutes of the game, but Maine answered back with their signature hot shooting around the perimeter to keep it close. Westchester went on a 12-3 run late in the quarter, led by one of the two newest members of the Westchester Knicks, Ron Anderson Jr., who led all scoring in the first with eight points. Westchester would lead 30-27 at the end of the first quarter.

The Knicks held the lead throughout the entire second quarter, only letting the Red Claws tie them once, despite 11 points from Frazier. Westchester stayed away from the perimeter, only attempting three from behind the arc, yet led the half 56-54 with 32 points in the paint. The Red Claws bested Westchester in the third as Knicks had trouble converting from the line, missing four free throws in the final minute of the third quarter. Maine took the lead heading into the final quarter, 82-78 over Westchester.

Westchester forward Marcus Ginyard came to play in the fourth quarter, upping the momentum for the Knicks by scoring five straight points starting with a three to tie it up with nine minutes to go. The two teams were back and forth, the lead changing six times, neither team wanting to give up this hotly contested match. It was a driving lay-up in the last 10 seconds of the game from Walker Russell Jr., his first game as a Knick, that looked would give Westchester the edge as they led 98-97. But with mere seconds on the clock, Maine's Tim Frazier handed the Knicks a heartbreaking loss with a lay-up that the Knicks would not be able to contest.

Despite the loss, there were many bright spots for Westchester: Ben Strong had a team high 15 points with six rebounds. Six Knicks found double digits, four of which were off the bench (Strong, Ginyard, Russell Jr., Anderson Jr.). Darnell Jackson had 14 points and added three rebounds and two steals. Thanasis Antetokounmpo and Marcus Ginyard each had 13 points while Langston Galloway ended with an impressive 11 rebounds and also contributed eight points.

Frazier led the Red Claws with 24 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Cory Jefferson, on assignment with from the Brooklyn Nets, had the other double-double for Maine with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Forward Christian Watford added 14 points; forward Chris Babb with 13 points.

The Westchester Knicks return to the Westchester County Center tomorrow, Jan. 3 at 1:00 p.m. to face the Iowa Energy, the NBA Development League affiliate of the Memphis Grizzlies.
