Colorado Rapids News Release
A pair of young Rapids players in Chris Klute and Dillon Serna are expected to miss this Saturday's match against Sporting Kansas City (TICKETS), but both are making solid progress in their return from injury. Rapids Head Coach Pablo Mastroeni indicated that he will re-evaluate both players early next week to see if they are possibilities for the following match.
Klute suffered a hamstring strain in the first match of the season against the Red Bulls, while Serna sprained his ankle last Thursday, after playing the full 90 minutes in New York.
"[Serna is] not going to be ready for this game," said Mastroeni on Thursday. "We'll just re-assess it early next week. And Klute won't be ready for this game. And we'll see where he's at. For us as a staff, it's more 'is he available for this game or not?' Then we'll re-visit it on Sunday and Monday and see where he's at."
Both players have been jogging during recent practices as they rehabilitate their injuries, and while they are making solid progress and feeling better, the lack of training sessions will keep them out at least for this week's game.
Mastroeni was quick to highlight the work being done by the rest of the squad, with Vicente Sánchez taking a starting role against Portland (scoring one penalty and creating another) and Marc Burch coming in at left back for Klute.
"The guys that are stepping in for those guys have done a tremendous job," said Mastroeni. "That's been my focal point."ÃÂ
The Rapids will also be without midfielder José Mari on Saturday, who is out due to suspension following a red card he received at the end of last Saturday's match against the Timbers.
