March 21, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release
Carl Klingberg and Josh Lunden each fired a pair of goals as the St. John's IceCaps dominated the Hartford Wolf Pack 6-1 Friday night at the XL Center in Hartford.
Klingberg also added an assist while Andrew Gordon and Jerome Samson each recorded a goal and a helper for St. John's. Will O'Neill collected three assists for the IceCaps, who have won 11 of their past 12 games.
Lunden opened the scoring at 2:37 of the first stanza, lifting the puck over the shoulder of Hartford netminder Dov Grumet-Morris. Austen Brassard did much of the spade work in the corner and was credited with an assist, as was O'Neill. With St. John's on a 5-on-3 powerplay, Samson corralled a loose puck at the side of the net to ring up his 21st goal of the season at 9:48 of the first. Andrew Gordon and Jason Jaffray had assists. The IceCaps closed out the period on Lunden's second, on the powerplay at 11:44. Klingberg found a streaking Lunden in front of the net to give the IceCaps a commanding 3-0 lead.
Danny Syvret got Hartford on the board at 9:16 of the second, as his point shot eluded a screened Tyler Beskorowany in the IceCaps cage. With the Wolf Pack pressing, Klingberg tuned on the jets, sped in on a breakaway and put an unassisted, one-handed backhander under the crossbar at 10:27 of the middle frame. O'Neill and Jamie MacQueen were awarded assists.
The IceCaps padded their lead to 5-1, 40 seconds into the third period as Andrew Gordon fired a rocket from the top of the left face-off circle on the powerplay for his team-leading 22nd goal. O'Neill and Samson picked up assists. Klingberg netted his second at 14:05 cutting to the net and sniping a backhander top shelf. Kyle MacKinnon had the helper.
The IceCaps next play the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Saturday night (8:30 PM NT). Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers at www.stjohnsicecaps.com and 930 AM This is Newfoundland Labrador, or watch online at www.ahllive.com. Pregame show begins a half hour before puck drop.
