Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Peter Mannino stopped 16 shots en route to his second consecutive shutout, as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins posted a 2-0 win over the Syracuse Crunch on Friday night at the OnCenter. The win was the fifth in a row for the Penguins (35-20-3-5, 78 points), who remain one point behind the Binghamton Senators in the race for the East Division title.
Syracuse (24-28-4-6, 58 points) was held scoreless for the second straight game, and saw its winless streak stretched to three games (0-2-0-1).
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton took a 1-0 lead just 7:38 into the contest as Spencer Machacek picked up his 17th goal of the season, and his eighth in 14 games as a member of the Penguins. It was also his second game-winner with Wilkes-Barre, and third overall this season.
Adam Payerl followed Machacek's score up 10:01 later, netting his third of the season with a power play tally to complete the night's scoring.
That would be all the offense the visitors would need, though, as Mannino extended his shutout streak to 162:20. He last allowed a goal at the 17:40 mark of the first period in a 5-1 win against the Hamilton Bulldogs March 14, and has now won four straight games and five of his past six starts. The only blemish in that time was a 1-0 shootout loss to the Utica Comets on March 7.
Mannino could get a chance to avenge that defeat at the hands of Utica Saturday night when the Comets visit Wilkes-Barre at 7:05pm. The first 5,000 fans at the game will receive a Penguins umbrella, courtesy of PNC Bank and Fox 56.
Fewer than 300 seats remain for Saturday night's game. Tickets for Saturday night's game are available at the Mohegan Sun Arena box office, online at TicketMaster.com or by calling the Penguins at 570-208-7367.
