Kivlehan Pushes Rainiers Past Bees

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - For the second night in a row, the Tacoma Rainiers (58-42) collected an extra-innings victory over the Salt Lake Bees (47-52), this time a 7-5 decision in 11 innings on Sunday night at Smith's Ballpark.
Left fielder Stefen Romero (2x4) and first baseman Dan Vogelbach (2x4) combined to score five runs while driving in two RBI and reaching base six times. Third baseman Patrick Kivlehan and second baseman Zach Shank also both drove in a pair of runs.
Vogelbach got the Rainiers on the board early with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. It was his second home run of the series, his first with the Rainiers.
Salt Lake cut Tacoma's lead in half to 2-1 with a single run in the bottom of the opening frame. Craig Gentry led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild pitch by Gaviglio.
Back-to-back two-out run scoring doubles from Gentry and Cliff Pennington pushed the Bees out in front 4-2 in the bottom of the second inning.
Tacoma retook the lead with a trio of runs in the top of the sixth inning, kick started by a pair of walks to open the frame from Romero and Vogelbach. Following a single from designated hitter Dario Pizzano to load the bases, Shank roped a two-run double to left field. Right fielder Ryan Strausborger lifted a sacrifice fly one batter later to give the Rainiers the go-ahead run at 5-4.
Ryan Jackson evened the game at 5-5 with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning - he drove in Rafael Ortega, who had tripled to center two batters earlier.
Kivlehan put the Rainiers back out in front 7-5 with a two-run double in the top of the 10th inning that fell short of a diving Cal Towey in right field. The hit scored catcher Rob Brantly from first and Vogelbach, who was running on contact, from first base.
Tacoma starting pitcher Sam Gaviglio worked 5.2 innings in just his second start of the year for the Rainiers - he held Salt Lake to four runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Tacoma and Salt Lake conclude their series tomorrow, Monday, July 25 with a first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. PT. Rainiers right-hander Cody Martin (8-6, 3.91) and Bees righty Kyle McGowin (4-7, 5.70) are slated to square off on the mound.
