November 8, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Kitchener Rangers News Release
Kitchener, ON - The Kitchener Rangers, LETR, Special Olympics Ontario and Waterloo Regional Police Service are teaming up during the month of November to help raise awareness about the importance of grass-root programming during an upcoming Rangers home game on Friday, November 12th versus the Owen Sound Attack.
The awareness campaign is part of the ongoing commitment and partnership with the Ontario Hockey League Kitchener Rangers and LETR/Special Olympics Ontario that has been happening since 2007 with the goal to raise awareness for over 26,000 athletes across the province.
"Special Olympics Ontario (SOO) thanks to the Kitchener Rangers and Waterloo Regional Police Service for their ongoing support of the movement. Since 2007, teams across the Ontario Hockey League have supported SOO with OHL Big Ticket Games which provide much needed funds and awareness to 26,000 athletes living in Ontario with intellectual disabilities. Together, we champion inclusion, acceptance and offer opportunities to many athletes in the Region to participate and thrive in the sport. Thank you!"
Glenn MacDonell, President and CEO - Special Olympics Ontario.
The Rangers are thrilled to continue to support Special Olympics Ontario. "We too believe sport should be accessible to all Ontarians. Special Olympics Ontario continues to be a leader in making this a reality and we look forward to celebrating them at our game," said Michelle Benevides, Director of Marketing and Communications for the Kitchener Rangers.
Since March 2020, Special Olympics athletes have been actively keeping busy through a range of virtual program offerings. Today, communities are making a return to in-person sports and programs. The OHL and LETR partners want to celebrate their return and help raise awareness for an organization that changes the lives of many.
"The Waterloo Regional Police Service is proud to be part of this incredible night and to continue our support for Special Olympics Ontario," said Cherri Greeno, Manager of Corporate Communications and Public Information for WRPS. "Special Olympics is about more than sports - it's about offering invaluable experiences and contributions to the lives of athletes that extend well beyond the game. This event offers the community an opportunity to not only watch an exciting game, but to see firsthand the great work that SOO does for athletes across the province. It's also an opportunity to raise awareness about respect and inclusion and the fact that when you work hard and work together, dreams can come true."
