Kirtley's Two Homers Lead Boulders Past Miners

Rockland County, NY - Zach Kirtley had three hits, including a pair of home runs, and knocked in four runs as the New York Boulders downed the Sussex County Miners, 12-7, in Frontier League action on Wednesday at Palisades Credit Union Park.

Kirtley hit a three-run shot in the fourth inning that gave New York a 5-3 lead and added a solo shot two frames later that increased their advantage to 7-5.

The win was the second in a row for New York - and the second successive loss for the Miners, who had suffered just two defeats over their first 15 games this season.

Former National League All-Star Todd Frazier had one hit in three trips to the plate for the Miners, a ninth inning solo home run,

The Boulders grabbed their 5-3 lead with a five-run fourth inning, digging themselves out of a 3-0 hole.

With one out, Tucker Nathans singled and scored when Zach Penprase's single was misplayed in right field by Chuck Taylor, the error allowing Penprase to reach third. A groundout by Milton Smith, Jr. scored Penprase to make it a 3-2 game.

Phil Capra and Jack Sundberg each singled before Zach Kirtley blasted a long three-run home run to left off Miners' starter Billy Layne, Jr.. The home run was Kirtley's second of the season.

Tucker Nathans' first home run of the season, a solo shot to right, increased the New York lead to 6-3 in the fifth inning.

Sussex County got back into the game with a two-out, two-run home run to right by Martin Figueroa, his first of year and his third hit of the evening, that cut the Miners' deficit to 6-5. It also ended New York starter Ben Strahm's night, the righthander allowing five runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings of work.

Kirtley's second home run of the night, a solo shot to right-center, pushed the Boulders' lead back to two runs at 7-5 in the seventh inning. That homer was Kirtley's third of the year.

New York tacked on five more runs in the seventh inning, breaking the game open and increasing their lead to 12-5 after an RBI single by Penprase and two-run doubles from Capra and Sundberg.

Sussex County had jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, scoring one in the first and two in the second off of Strahm. A Figueroa two-out single gave the Miners a 1-0 first inning lead; then, in the second, they plated one on a three-base error by New York first baseman Ray Hernandez on a groundball off the bat of Cito Culver and a sacrifice fly by Joey Rose.

Sundberg and Capra each ended the night with two RBIs.

Strahm got the win for New York, leveling his season mark at 1-1, while Layne, Jr. took his first loss of the year after taking his first two decisions.

The Boulders and Miners wrap up their three-game series on Thursday at Palisades Credit Union Park, first pitch is set for 7 p.m.
