York Revolution News Release
The frustrations for the York Revolution continued, losing a rain-shortened game 4-2 to the Lancaster Barnstormers on Sunday evening at Sovereign Bank Stadium. The game was called with one out in the top of the seventh inning, immediately after Kody Kirkland had connected on his second home run of the game, as the third baseman drove in all four of Lancaster's runs. Due to weather conditions, the scheduled "Man on Fire" stunt event to be performed by Ted Batchelor, presented by Keystone Restorations & Builders, was forced to be cancelled. The Revs will look to reschedule the event for a future date if possible, but no makeup for the promotion has been announced.
Revs starter Corey Thurman (8-2) allowed nothing else aside from Kirkland's two long balls, but saw his club record eight-game winning streak come to a close, losing for the first time since May 1. It was just the third time in Thurman's 15 starts that York has lost this season.
Kirkland launched a three-run shot to left-center in the second inning spotting Lancaster an early 3-0 lead, and after the Revs had pulled within one, drove a solo shot out to right-center with one out in the seventh to provide the final scoring, just before the skies opened for the second time. The game had been delayed by an hour and 19 minutes at the outset due to rain as well.
Barnstormers starter Alan Johnson (8-4) continued an impressive showing by Lancaster pitching, taking a shutout into the sixth. He allowed a pair of two-out singles in the second and third innings, but escaped by way of line outs each time.
The Revs scored earned runs against Lancaster's staff for the first time all weekend when Andres Perez singled with two outs in the sixth, and Chris Nowak hammered a towering two-run homer down the left field line, bringing the Revs within one. Nowak took over the team-lead with his 12th of the season, snapping a four-game homerless drought for the Revs who now lead the league with 84 long balls on the year. York never got a chance to continue the comeback push, however, with the game called a half inning later.
The loss is the fifth straight for the Revs, their longest skid of the season, as they fall to 0-3 in the second half as a result of the sweep. Lancaster tied its longest winning streak in club history with a seventh straight victory. Lancaster has also followed a four-game winning streak by the Revs in the head-to-head season series by winning each of the last five meetings, taking a lead in the "War of the Roses" series for the first time this season, 7-6.
Notes: Thurman struck out a season-high six, and climbed from tenth into a tie for eighth on the Atlantic League's all-time strikeout chart with 437 in his Revs career. His first inning of work also made him the ninth pitcher in league history to total 600.0 innings in the league. Nowak's homer was the 37th of his Revs career, just five shy of matching Jason Aspito's all-time record of 42. Teammates Scott Grimes (41) and James Shanks (39) are currently ahead of Nowak in pursuit of the record. It's the first time the Revs have started a half with an 0-3 record since the first half of the 2008 season. York will look to rebound, hosting the Bridgeport Bluefish in the opener of a four-game series on Monday evening at 6:30 p.m. Revs lefty Matt Chico (1-2, 5.16) will face Bridgeport southpaw Gilbert De La Vara (3-5, 3.93). It is a Hatfield Dollar Dog Night with the Hot Dog Cannon, as free hot dogs will be fired into the crowd. Tickets are available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
