Scott Kazmir (0-2) followed up his first start from before the All-Star break with another one inning performance in route back to form for Sugar Land Sunday afternoon. With an extended pitch count limit, Kazmir was pulled in the second for Pedro Liriano after allowing six runs on six hits while walking and striking out two.
Nick Green (4-5) triumphed in his fourth appearance against Sugar Land with his first complete game of the season allowing just one run on six scattered singles while striking out three and walking one.
Southern Maryland started the scoring in the first inning when Jeremy Owens walked to get one base for the third straight game in a row in his first at-bat. Kevin Rios struck out swinging, but the Blue Crabs used three singles in a row, the middle single from Casey Benjamin produced an RBI, to take a 1-0 lead. After Mike Daniel struck out looking, Kazmir gave up a two RBI single with the bases loaded to catcher Christian Lopez to increase the lead for the visitors, 3-0.
Kazmir came back out to start the second, but after facing three batters, manager Gary Gaetti made a switch. The lefty gave up another walk to Owens and a stolen base, an RBI double to Rios that scored the center fielder to push the lead to four, and an RBI triple to Brian Barton to make the score 5-0. Liriano came in to face Benjamin and got the second baseman to ground out for the first out of the inning, but one batter after Travis Garcia brought in Barton from third with a groundout to third, 6-0.
Liriano finished impressively with three innings of work without allowing a hit and only one walk before Sean Morgan took over in the fifth. Garcia led off the inning against the righty, and on the second pitch, Garcia left the yard down the left-field line with his first homer of the year, 7-0.
The only run of the night for Sugar Land came in the bottom of the eighth when Ryde Rodriguez reached with a one-out single and stole second to get in scoring position. Amadeo Zazueta collected his first hit as a Skeeter pushing the right fielder to third, and in the next at-bat, Bubba Bell hit a sac-fly to center to put the home team on the board, 7-1.
Green worked efficiently for the Blue Crabs throwing only 103 pitches retiring the side in the ninth after only facing four batters before ending the game on a Steve Moss fly out to center.
