Frederick Keys News Release

In the final home series of the regular season, the Keys dropped the opener in ugly fashion to the Kinston Indians, 9-2. After taking an earlier 2-0 lead, the K-Tribe scored nine unanswered runs and rolled to their seventh consecutive victory. In the loss, Frederick mustered just three hits. The Keys are now 29-35 in second-half of season following the defeat.

RHP Ryan O'Shea started Tuesday night for the Keys but only went three innings. With Frederick knowing they will begin postseason play a week from Tuesday, the Keys wanted to set up their rotation and that meant only tossing O'Shea for the first three innings. In his limited outing, O'Shea did not allow a run on three hits while striking out one and walking one.

Reigning Carolina League Player of the Week, 1B Tyler Townsend, gave the Keys the early lead. With two out and one on, Townsend jacked a Marty Popham pitch deep to centerfield. Townsend's third home run in the last seven games gave Frederick a two-run advantage. The Lewes, DE native finished the night with two hit of the Keys three hits.

After O'Shea exited the game, LHP Nate Nery entered. C Chun Chen doubled off Nery with one down in the fourth. 3B Kyle Bellows followed up with a two-run blast to tie the game. Kinston added another run in the fifth on a RBI double by 2B Karexon Sanchez. The Indians scored two more runs in the seventh, one earned, to extend their lead to three runs after seven innings. Nery was relieved in the seventh by RHP John Mariotti. On the night, Nery allowed five runs to score, four earned, on six hits.

Kinston scored four runs off Mariotti in the ninth and cruised to the 9-2 victory. RHP Marty Popham notched his fourth victory of the year after allowing two runs, zero earned, on two hits. The Indians bullpen of RHP Travis Turek and RHP David Roberts tossed three innings of scoreless relief.

Frederick will look to bounce back on Wednesday night when they take on the Indians in game two of the four-game series. RHP Zach Clark (2-2, 5.05) will start for the Keys while Kinston will counter with LHP T.J. McFarland (10-5, 3.28). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from Harry Grove Stadium. Wednesday night is also Belly Buster Wednesday. Adults can purchase a ticket to an all-you-can-eat buffet in the Picnic Pavilion for just $21 while children are just $18.
