Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AUGUST 31, 2010) - Nate Jones threw seven scoreless innings and the Dash scored six runs in the second to blow by the Hillcats 6-0 on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark. The win was Winston-Salem's fifth in a row and improved the team to a season-high 21 games over .500.
After neither team put a man on base through the first inning and a half, the Dash offense switched into its highest gear in the bottom of the second inning. Seth Loman led off with his 24th home run of the season, a towering shot over the tall fence in right-center field.
After Pedro Villarreal (0-2) retired Nick Ciolli, Logan Johnson and Luis Sierra singled and moved into scoring position on a fielder's choice. Greg Paiml walked to load the bases for Kenny Williams, Jr., who singled to right. Johnson and Sierra both scored to make it 3-0 Winston-Salem (33-28, 76-55). Jose Martinez then drilled an 0-1 pitch over the wall in left for a three-run home run to double the Dash's lead. It was his fourth homer of the season and his first in 75 at bats.
One big inning was all Nate Jones and the Winston bullpen would need. Jones (11-5) followed up an outstanding start last time out against the Hillcats (30-32, 59-73) with an even better one on Tuesday. The right-hander scattered three hits and two walks over seven shutout innings. He picked up his 11th win, tying him for the second most in the Carolina League this season. Taylor Thompson threw a scoreless inning in his Dash debut and Tyson Corley worked a perfect ninth.
Villarreal (0-2) took the loss after giving up six runs on five hits in three innings.
Winston's five-game winning streak is its longest since another five-gamer May 8-12. Tuesday's shutout was the team's fourth of the season and its second in less than a week. The Dash shut out the Hillcats last Wednesday in Lynchburg.
Winston-Salem goes for its sixth-straight win on Wednesday night. RHP Dylan Axelrod (7-2, 2.05), who threw a complete game shutout against the 'Cats last week, pitches for the Dash against RHP Curtis Partch (4-10, 4.71). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the audio broadcast starting at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
