Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - There is nothing more sacred to the Wilmington Blue Rocks than the organization's ironclad relationship with the community. And there is nothing more important to the community than the men and women who bravely serve and protect it as police officers. On Wednesday, September 1, Frawley Stadium will be filled with local police officers and their families for a night to remember and honor those who serve and protect.
Police Night with the Wilmington Blue Rocks is an annual event presented by the Ronnie Williams Foundation and hosted by the Wilmington Blue Rocks. It will be a night that recognizes the sacrifices officers make every day.
This year the memory of Chad Spicer will be honored. Spicer and his partner, Shawn Brittingham were shot in the line of duty on September 1, 2009. Spicer did not survive.
"This year we mark the one-year anniversary of Officer Spicers' passing," said Jennifer Hawkins, co-founder of the Ronnie Williams Foundation. "His legacy and sacrifice will be remembered during pre-game ceremonies and with fellow Georgetown Officer Matthew Barlow singing the National Anthem."
In addition to honoring Officer Spicer, there will be pre-game police demonstrations from Delaware State, Wilmington, New Castle County and several other police agencies. Antique police cars and the New Castle County Police Mounted Unit will be on parade in addition to a multi-agency honor guard performance with the Pipe & Drums unit.
There will be displays throughout the stadium and raffle tickets on sale for a big screen TV with proceeds benefiting the Ronnie Williams Foundation. Plus, there will be a game-worn hat auction and raffle during the game. The hats worn by Blue Rocks players during the contest will be designed with a patch from one of Delaware's police departments, and each hat is truly one of a kind.
The Ronnie Williams Foundation is named for Delaware State Trooper Ronald Williams, Jr., who passed away in 2002. The Foundation supports local police agencies by providing funds for programs. They also give annual scholarships to area high school seniors. To find out more about the foundation, please visit www.thergwfoundation.org.
The Wilmington Blue Rocks are offering all police officers a free ticket for the September 1 game. To order tickets for Police Night, please call the Blue Rocks at (302) 888-BLUE (2583) or visit www.bluerocks.com.
