July 24, 2006 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - The Los Angeles Kings, the parent club of the Manchester Monarchs, have re-signed restricted free agent left wing Sean Avery to a one-year contract, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today. Per club policy, terms of the agreement were not announced.
Avery, 26, played in 75 games this past season with the Kings and set career-highs with 39 points, 15 goals and 24 assists. He also had an NHL-high 257 penalty minutes, the second straight season he has led the League in penalty minutes (he had a career-high 261 penalty minutes during the 2004-05 season).
"I'm excited about returning to the Kings for another year and a chance to play for the great fans in LA. I'm looking forward to getting back to work with my teammates and, through our hard work and determination, having the opportunity to reach my ultimate goal of winning a Stanley Cup," said Avery.
The 5-foot-9, 185-pound native of Pickering, Ontario, also this past season tied for second on the Kings with three-shorthanded goals, and he has one power-play goal and one game-winning goal while recording 189 shots, third most on the Kings.
Avery was acquired by the Kings from the Detroit Red Wings on March 11, 2003, with Maxim Kuznetsov, a first-round choice in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft (Jeff Tambellini) and a second-round choice in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft (later transferred to Boston) for Mathieu Schneider. In 238 career regular season games with the Kings and the Red Wings, Avery has 86 points (32-54=86) and 739 penalty minutes.
Avery appeared in three playoff games with the Monarchs during the 2003 Calder Cup playoffs. He collected three points (2-1=3) and eight penalty minutes in the three games against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
