Canucks Sign Edler, Hansen and Heshka

The Vancouver Canucks, the NHL affiliate of the Manitoba Moose, announced they have signed defencemen Alex Edler and Shaun Heshka, as well as forward Jannik Hansen to National Hockey League contracts.

Edler, 20, appeared in 62 games in his rookie season with the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League. In that span, he scored 13 goals and 40 assists for 53 points and 44 penalty minutes. He finished fifth in scoring amongst defencemen in the WHL. In 12 post-season games, the native of Ostersund, Sweden ended up with three goals and five assists for eight points and 12 penalty minutes. Edler was Vancouver's third round choice, 91st overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Hansen, 20, also appeared in his first season in the WHL in 2005-06 where he scored 24 goals and 40 assists for 64 points and 67 penalty minutes in 53 games with the Portland Winter Hawks. The native of Harley, Denmark finished second in team scoring and 19th overall in scoring in the WHL. He also finished second on the Winter Hawks in team scoring in 12 post-season games where he collected seven goals and six assists for 13 points and 16 penalty minutes. Hansen was Vancouver's ninth round choice, 287th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Heshka, 20, spent three seasons with the WHL's Everett Silvertips. Last season, the Melleville, SK native scored 10 goals and 49 assists for 59 points and 91 penalty minutes to finish second in the entire league in scoring amongst defencemen. He was also second in scoring amongst defencemen in the WHL playoffs when he collected three goals and 10 assists for 13 points and 10 penalty minutes in 14 games. Overall, Heshka finished up his junior career with 25 goals and 82 assists for 107 points and 137 penalty minutes in 204 career WHL games.
