Clinton LumberKings News Release
Beloit, WI - It took 13 innings to accomplish, but the Clinton LumberKings snapped a five-game losing streak and staved off a Beloit sweep with a 3-0 win over the Snappers Thursday night at Pohlman Field. Ramon Morla tripled with one out in the top of the 13th and scored on a fielder's choice by Tim Morris, giving the Kings the only run they'd need.
Morla ripped the triple to the wall in right-center off left-hander Clint Dempster, then scored from third on Morris's grounder to shortstop Daniel Santana. Carlos Ramirez then singled and Marcus Littlewood walked to load the bases. Dempster (L, 0-1) fired one last pitch, hitting Julio Morban to force in the second run.
Kevin Rivers added an RBI groundout on right-hander Matt Hauser to raise the lead to 3-0.
Right-hander Tyler Burgoon (W, 1-0) utilized a double play from Morla to escape trouble in the 12th and worked 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 13th to secure the win.
Starting pitching was the main highlight for most of the night as LumberKings' right-hander George Mieses tossed 7.0 innings of two-hit baseball and Beloit left-hander Logan Darnell answered with just two hits allowed over his 8.0 innings.
While the LumberKings' offense failed to put a runner in scoring position until the 10th, the relief staff rose to the challenge of holding a scoreless tie. Left-hander Jason Markovitz worked free from a bases-loaded situation in the ninth, inducing Kyle Knudson into an inning-ending lineout to center.
Markovitz worked past a one-out walk in the 10th, giving him 2.0 scoreless innings. Right-hander Matt Bischoff came on for the 11th and allowed a one-out single to Oswaldo Arcia and a two-out walk to Derek McCallum, yet retired Knudson as well to leave two runners on. Bischoff as well did not allow a run over 2.0 innings despite two walks and a hit allowed.
The LumberKings (2-6) return home to open a six-game homestand tomorrow night at 6:30 PM as they take on Kane County (3-5). Right-hander Fray Martinez (0-0, 2.25) makes his second appearance, first start for Clinton, while the Cougars counter with right-hander Keaton Hayenga (1-0, 1.80).
