South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - A great pitchers' duel on Thursday night ended up with the South Bend Silver Hawks on the wrong side of a 1-0 scoreboard at Coveleski Stadium. The loss was the third in four games to the Lansing Lugnuts, and South Bend falls to 2-6 on the young season.
Both starting pitchers were sensational from the start, with each recording 7.0 scoreless innings before giving it over to the bullpen.
South Bend starter Patrick Schuster (ND) allowed just two hits and two walks in his time on the mound, striking out one. The only Lansing threat against Schuster was a one-out bases loaded jam in the third, but Schuster got out of that by inducing a ground ball double play from Carlos Perez to end the inning.
Lansing starter Casey Lawrence (WP, 1-0) gave up only three hits and no walks, while striking out two in his seven innings to earn the victory. South Bend's biggest threat came in the bottom of the sixth when they had runners at first and second and two out. Mike Freeman lined a single to right, but Markus Brisker threw out Bobby Stone trying to score from second to preserve the scoreless tie.
The Lugnuts broke through in the top of the eighth against reliever Dan Taylor (LP, 1-1). Balbino Fuenmayor had a single to left with one out and went to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Brisker lined a double down the left field line to plate the only run of the game.
Scott Gracey (ND) stranded a one out double in the eighth, while Steve Turnbull (SV, 3) recorded his third save of the series with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Freeman's hit in the sixth inning extended his current hitting streak to six games. Raywilly Gomez had two hits for South Bend and Raul Navarro picked up a single to carry his streak to five.
The Silver Hawks remain at home and welcome in the West Michigan Whitecaps (Detroit Tigers) for a weekend series beginning on Friday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM Eastern Time with RHP Bradin Hagens (0-0, 8.31 ERA) going up against LHP Kyle Ryan (0-0, 9.82 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:10 PM Eastern Time on www.silverhawks.com and www.sportsjuice.com.
