Chiefs Nearly No-Hit Thursday, Lose 5-1

Burlington, IA - The Peoria Chiefs were no-hit into the eighth inning before scratching across a late run in a 5-1 loss to the Burlington Bees on Thursday night. Burlington starter AJ Griffin finished with one hit allowed through 7 2/3 innings on nine strikeouts as the Chiefs fall to 3-5 on the season. The roadtrip continues Friday with a three game series in Appleton, WI against the Milwaukee Brewers affiliated Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.
For the second night in a row the Bees took advantage of early Chiefs errors to take a big lead. Tony Thompson started the inning by reaching second on a throwing error by Chiefs third baseman Anthony Giansanti. Pitcher Dallas Beeler made a nice play on a grounder off the bat of Jose Rivero and Beeler threw out Thompson at third. Ryan Consigli singled to right and Wade Kirkland walked to load the bases. John Nester made it 3-0 Burlington with a double to left and Ryan Pineda drew a walk from Beeler. Giansanti bobbled a grounder from Tyreace House for his second error of the inning as Burlington reloaded the bases. Nino Leyja cashed in with a two-run single to right for a 5-0 lead before Beeler got a double play to end the inning.
The Chiefs did not have a hit against Griffin through the first seven innings with just two walks and an error for their three baserunners. Griffin started the eighth with strikeout number nine before Giansanti hit a slow roller to third. Leyja charged and threw high as Giansanti beat it out but the play was ruled an error to keep the no-hitter intact. However, Sergio Burruel singled through the right side on the next pitch to give the Chiefs their first hit of the contest. Griffin retired Elliot Soto on a grounder before giving way to Drew Tyson who struck out Matt Szczur to end the eighth.
The Chiefs avoided the shutout against Tyson in the ninth. Pierre LePage led off with a double to the left-field corner and he scored on a double to center by Greg Rohan. Rohan moved to third on a groundout by Richard Jones but Tyson struck out Smaily Borges and got DJ Fitzgerald to ground out to end the game.
Beeler (0-1) allowed five runs, two earned, on three hits in two innings of work. He walked two and struck out one in his first start of the season. Robinson Lopez threw five shutout innings and allowed four hits and a walk while striking out three. Eduardo Figueroa threw one inning and allowed just a walk.
Griffin threw a gem for the Bees. He retired the first nine Chiefs and allowed one hit while walking two and striking out nine through 7 2/3 innings. The righty out of the University of San Diego threw 86 pitches, 67 for strikes in his second career start.
Casey's General Store Player of the Game - Sergio Burruel (C) - The Chiefs catcher prevented the Bees from no-hitting the Chiefs for the third time in eight years. He finished 1-for-3 and broke up the no-hitter with one out in the eighth.
