Kenosha Kingfish News Release
Kenosha, Wis. - The Kenosha Kingfish (2-3) were edged by the Traverse City Pit Spitters (5-0) on Sunday afternoon at Historic Simmons Field by a final score of 3-2.
The win was the 16th in a row for the Pit Spitters dating back to the first half, which ties a Northwoods League record for most consecutive victories.
Jake Wilson (Bowling Green State) gave Traverse City an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-RBI triple off the right field fence.
The Pit Spitters scored in the second inning on a throw from right field skipped past third base, allowing Drake Titus (Army) to cross the plate and make the game 3-0.
Mike Jarvis (San Diego State) brought the Kingfish within a run at 3-2 with a two-run home run in the sixth inning. The home run was Jarvis' second and Kenosha's seventh on the season.
Traverse City starting pitcher Austin Shea (Toccoa Falls) exited after six innings having allowed two runs on four hits and a walk.
Traverse City did not notch another hit after Wilson's first inning triple until Michael Slaten (Benedictine) doubled to lead off the seventh, but Matt Helwig (Wisconsin-Parkside) stranded him on third base to keep the deficit at one.
Pit Spitters reliever Kevin Hahn (California State-Stanislaus) got out of a bases-loaded one-out jam with no damage in the eighth inning to preserve the 3-2 edge.
Evan Gates (North Carolina A&T) locked down his third save of summer in the ninth inning to secure the historic 3-2 win.
Shea improved to 3-0 for the Pit Spitters, while Caleb Larson (Illinois) fell to 0-3 for the Kingfish.
Kenosha and Traverse City wrap up a two-game series on Monday at Historic Simmons Field at 7:05.
