Richmond Kickers News Release

RICHMOND, VA (Wednesday, June 9, 2010) - The Richmond Kickers (4-2-3) take to the road this Friday, June 11th to take on the league leaders Charleston Battery (6-2-3) at 7:30 p.m. Blackbaud Stadium will provide the venue as the two clubs square off for the second time within a week. The Kickers return to the friendly confines of Richmond City Stadium next Tuesday, June 15th to host Crystal Palace Baltimore in the First Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Valuable points will be up for grabs in this meeting between the current table leaders and the defending USL Second Division champions. Charleston, who has played two more games than Richmond, will be desperate to keep their distance between second place. On the other hand, the Kickers cannot afford a misstep, with Charlotte trailing by just a single point in the standings.

Last Saturday, the Kickers completed their second annual School's Out Festival in style, defeating the Battery, 3-1. The first half of a very physical encounter finished scoreless before a flurry of goals after the restart. Forward Edson Elcock and midfielder Bobby Foglesong each converted rebound opportunities to give the home side a two goal advantage. Defender Sascha Görres then added a remarkable goal from 40-yards to ensure the Kickers would claim all three points. Battery midfielder, Alioune Gueye, pulled one back for the visitors with a header following a corner.

This trip marks the first time the Kickers have visited Charleston since August 20th, 2005 when both clubs were playing in the USL First Division. The Battery remains the only team in the league that is undefeated at home.

Charleston and Richmond will clash three more times within their next five league matches. The results of these meetings will go a long way in shaping the season ending playoff picture. The Kickers hold a slight edge in the overall series, 17-16-4.

Team of the Week Honors

Kickers midfielder Luke Vercollone earned USL-2 Team of the Week honors this week after leading the Kickers to a 3-1 victory over Charleston. A defensive stalwart who is equally dangerous offensively, the workhorse in the midfield garnered the honors for the second time this season.

Richmond City Stadium

The city-owned facility and home of the Richmond Kickers has reacquired its original name of City Stadium or Richmond City Stadium. Called UR Stadium for the past 27 years, City Stadium was the site of University of Richmond home football games from 1929-2009. The Richmond Kickers will continue to use Richmond City Stadium for the duration of the 2010 season.

Next Home Game
