June 9, 2010 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Charleston Battery News Release

Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery squares off with the Richmond Kickers Friday night at Blackbaud Stadium looking to avenge a 3-1 defeat suffered in Richmond last Saturday night. The loss, Charleston's second of the season, came as a road-weary Battery side played its second match in 24 hours having tied the Harrisburg City Islanders 1-1 at Blackbaud Stadium the night before.

Charleston (6-2-3, 21 points) enters the game in first place in USL-2 six points ahead of the second place Kickers (4-2-3, 15 points) but Richmond has played two games fewer than the Battery adding to the significance of Friday's game.

After a scoreless first half on Saturday at U of R Stadium, Richmond scored three goals in a twenty minute period at the start of the second half to take control of the game. The Battery responded with several chances but in the end settled for a late consolation goal from midfielder Alioune Gueye.

Charleston Battery head coach Mike Anhaeuser should have veteran midfielder Stephen Armstrong and defender John Wilson back available for selection on Friday night; neither player traveled with the team for the game in Richmond.

Midfielder John Gruenewald has resumed training with the first-team as he continues to recover from the hip-flexor injury that has sidelined him since pre-season.

The Richmond Kickers are the defending USL-2 Champions; the Kickers defeated the Charlotte Eagles 2-1 in last years final. Richmond is one of the Battery oldest rivals with both teams histories extending back to the 1993 season. Richmond holds a slight all-time edge over the Battery with seventeen wins to Charleston's sixteen; four games have finished in a tie.

Richmond head coach Leigh Cowlishaw has been with the team since 1993 and was a member of the Kicker's 1995 U.S. Open Cup winning side.

Richmond's roster includes two former Battery players, midfielder Mike Burke played for Charleston in 1998 and 1999, and midfielder Luke Vercollone featured for Charleston in 2006 and 2007.
