Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA - (Thursday, May 29, 2014) - The Richmond Kickers (5-1-4, 19 points) continue a three-games-in-four-days stretch this weekend, traveling to the Rochester Rhinos (9-2-4, 13 points) on Friday, May 30 before taking on the Harrisburg City Islanders (2-4-1, 7 points) on Saturday, May 31. Both games will be streamed on YouTube.com/RichmondKickers live from Sahlen's Stadium at 7:35 p.m. and Skyline Sports Complex at 7:00 p.m., respectively.
The Kickers take to the road after a grueling U.S. Open Cup Third Round marathon Wednesday night that resulted in a 2-1 victory over the NY Greek American Atlas (USASA) following a three-hour lightning delay. They return to regular season action after avenging the only loss of the 2014 campaign to the Charlotte Eagles with a 2-0 win at City Stadium last week. Midfielder George Davis IV earned USL PRO Team of the Week honors for the fourth consecutive week after converting a pair of free kicks while goalkeeper Joe Willis posted his second shutout in as many games.
With a rivalry dating back to 1999, the Kickers and the Rhinos close out the two-game series on Friday after battling to a 1-1 draw at City Stadium earlier this month. A defensive battle left the two sides scoreless until a last-minute flurry saw Rhinos forward Alex Dixon tally an 89th minute goal before Davis responded with the equalizer one minute later to narrow the Rhinos' all-time series record advantage to 9-8-8.
The Rhinos are 1-1-2 since the two clubs last met, most recently suffering a 1-0 loss to Sacramento Republic FC last week. One week prior, the Rhinos edged the Pittsburgh Riverhounds 1-0 with Dixon notching his second goal of the season.
Less than 24 hours later, the Kickers will continue onward to Harrisburg to take on the City Islanders for the first time this season. The Kickers led the two-game series in 2013, blanking the City Islanders with 2-0 and 1-0 home and away victories to extend their all-time series record to 12-3-7.
After a two game slide, the City Islanders bounced back to a 5-3 win over the Dayton Dutch Lions on May 17 when former S.L. Benfica forward Clesio Bauque tallied a pair of first half goals with Morgan Langley adding two goals and an assist. The City Islanders enter Saturday's match-up following a two week break from USL PRO action and conclude the three-game series against the Kickers at City Stadium on June 7 and July 26
