Charlotte Drops US Open Cup Match against Carolina

Charlotte, NC - The Charlotte Eagles ended their 2014 US Open Cup run with a 2-0 defeat against the Carolina Railhawks last night in Cary, NC.
Carolina opened the scoring in the 14th minute as Nazmi Albadawi found some space just inside the Eagles penalty area. Albadawi turned a sent a shot to the far post where it took a slight deflection off of an Eagles defender and found it's way just inside the left post.
The Eagles composed themselves well after going down early and had an even share of possession in the remainder of the first half. Gui Brandao, making his first professional start, and Jorge Herrera forced saves out of Railhawks goalkeeper, Scott Goodwin. The resulting corner kicks could not be converted however.
As the first half was wrapping up the Eagles were caught on the counter attack as Mike Grella took a long outlet and sprinted up field. His shot was well saved by Duckworth but the rebound landed right in the path of an on-rushing Jun Marques Davidson whose first-time shot put the hosts up 2-0 at the break.
The second half started with the Eagles pushing hard to find the back of the net but after playing last Wednesday in Orlando and last Saturday in Richmond the legs weren't there for the Eagles. Charlotte put on some good pressure as Wells Thompson forced a diving save from Goodwin which resulted in one of Charlotte's 12 corners on the night.
In the end the Eagles couldn't crack the Railhawks defense and bowed out of the Open Cup. Carolina will now host MLS's Chivas USA on June 14th. Charlotte will look to snap their current three-game losing skid when the Wilmington Hammerheads visit Queens Sports Complex on Saturday, May 31st. The Eagles were victorious against the Hammerheads earlier this season in Wilmington by a 2-0 scoreline.
