Charleston Battery News Release
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery visits Orlando City FC on Saturday night for 7:30 PM USL PRO match (Sports Radio 1450 AM). Charleston enters the game on the back of penalty-shootout loss versus Orlando's U23 (PDL) team in a third round US Open Cup game played at Blackbaud Stadium on Wednesday night.
Orlando U23's jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half on Wednesday but a pair of goals from striker Dane Kelly pulled the Battery back into the tie. Despite piling on the pressure in extra time the Battery could not find a winner and the game moved to a penalty shootout.
The teams took a combined US Open Cup record 28 penalties with Orlando U23's finally earning the 12-11 win at the conclusion of the 14th round.
The Battery's last USL PRO match was a 1-0 win versus the Pittsburgh Riverhounds last Saturday night at Blackbaud Stadium. Midfielder Amadou Sanyang scored the lone goal, volleying home from close range in the fist half.
Charleston (3-4-4, 13 points) is currently in 7th position in the USL PRO standings; Orlando City (8-0-3) are in first place and have yet to lose a game.
Orlando City are the defending USL PRO champions and are playing a final season in USL in 2014 before moving up to Major League Soccer for the 2015 season.
This is the third game of the season between the teams. Orlando held the Battery to a 1-1 draw in the opening match of the season in Charleston then took a 1-0 victory in the second match on April 12 in Orlando.
In 2013 the Battery played Orlando twice in the regular season tying 1-1 at Blackbaud Stadium and losing 2-1 in the reverse fixture played in Orlando. After progressing to the USL PRO semifinals the Battery were eliminated by Orlando losing 3-2 in a game played at the Florida Citrus Bowl.
The Battery's next home USL PRO match is on Saturday, June 14 versus LA Galaxy II (Blackbaud Stadium, Daniel Island - $10 - $18 - (843) 971-GOAL (4625) / www.charlestonbattery.com).
