Frederick Keys News Release
WOODBRIDGE, VA. - Five multi-hit efforts and a quality start gave the Frederick Keys (25-23) a 5-2 victory over the Potomac Nationals (19-30) on Sunday afternoon at Northeast Federal Field. Sean Miller had a pair of doubles with an RBI while J.C. Escarra powered a two-run home run in the seventh inning, his sixth of the season. Cole Billingsley, Jomar Reyes, and Yeltsin Gudino each tallied a pair of hits as well. The great starting pitching for Frederick continued with Brenan Hanifee (3-4) who lasted a season-high six innings to earn the win. The victory comes on the heels of a 1-0 loss on Saturday night.
Hanifee was solid through four innings but ran into trouble in the fifth. With one-out, Osvaldo Abreu was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a balk and took third on a wild pitch. Hanifee walked Armond Upshaw to put runners at the corners for Nick Banks, who singled in Abreu to take a 1-0 lead. Cole Freeman then scored Upshaw from second on a base hit to make it 2-0 Potomac. Hanifee got out of the jam by inducing a double-play to end the inning.
Kyle Johnston (5-5) pitched well but the Keys offense got to him in the sixth. After a lead-off walk, Escarra singled to put runners at first and second with no outs. Johnston got a strikeout, but Trevor Craport yanked a double past Anderson Franco at third, scoring a run to cut the deficit in half 2-1 with runners at second and third with one-out. Miller then hit a sacrifice fly to score Escarra and move Craport to third base and Gudino followed with an RBI single to give Frederick a 3-2 lead. The three-runs scored broke a 14 innings scoreless stretch which was the longest scoreless streak for Potomac this season.
Johnston's day ended after completing the sixth inning. He was charged with the loss after allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out four.
Hanifee came back out for the sixth and got the first two batters out before walking a pair and allowing a single to Abreu to load the bases for Upshaw. Hanifee struck him out on a slider to end the inning and the threat.
Hanifee earned his first win since April 29 and lasted a season-high six innings. He gave up five hits, walked four batters and struck out five.
Escarra's two-run home run came in the seventh inning when he crushed a pitch out of the stadium off Jeremy McKinney to make it 5-2. Luis Perez came on in relief of Hanifee and allow a hit while walking a pair to load the bases, but he struck out Jakson Reetz to get out of the jam. Diogenes Almengo (S, 5) put down Potomac one-two-three in the ninth inning to seal the win.
The Keys and P-Nats finish their four-game series on Monday, May 27 before a scheduled off-day on Tuesday. RHP Michael Baumann (1-2, 3.82) starts for Frederick opposite LHP Carson Teel (2-0, 1.53) for Potomac. First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m. and the game can be heard on frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn radio app with pregame coverage starting at 12:50 p.m.
