Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WILMINGTON, Del. - A furious comeback from the Myrtle Beach Pelicans fell short in walk-off fashion with the Wilmington Blue Rocks downing the Birds 6-5 on Sunday afternoon from Frawley Stadium.
With the Blue Rocks (31-19) leading 5-2 into the eighth inning, the Pelicans (18-33) woke up offensively. D.J. Wilson led off the inning with a walk and stole second before making it over the third on a fielder's choice which did not record an out, hit into by Tyler Payne , to put runners on the corners. Cam Balego then floated a single into right to plate Wilson and make it 5-3 Wilmington. A balk moved Payne to third and Balego to second before Grant Fennell lined a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in Payne to make it a one-run game.
Aramis Ademan then singled into right and Balego scored to tie the game at 5-5.
In the bottom of the ninth, Manuel Rodriguez (0-2) came on to try to send the game into extra innings for the Pelicans. With one out, Rudy Martin reached third on a throwing error, setting up a walk-off sacrifice fly from Brewer Hicklen to win the game 6-5 for Wilmington.
Though he blew the save in the eighth, Tad Ratliffe (1-1) earned the win for the Blue Rocks.
In the bottom of the first inning, Wilmington struck first offensively. Hicklen singled, stole second and, after being moved to third on a single, scored on a Dennisher Carrasco sacrifice fly to make it 1-0.
The Pelicans grabbed the lead in the top of the second, walking four times, including twice with the bases loaded. Zach Davis and Wilson coaxed the bases-loaded walks to give the Birds a 2-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the fifth, Hicklen tied the game with an RBI triple and then scored on a Cristian Perez RBI single to put Wilmington back out in front 3-2. Nick Pratto then hit a two-run home run to stake the Blue Rocks to a 5-2 lead.
The series finale of the Pelicans' four-game series in Wilmington against the Blue Rocks will take place on Monday at 12:05 p.m. The Pelicans will send RHP Javier Assad (2-4, 3.16) while RHP Brady Singer (4-2, 2.13) will go for the Blue Rocks.
