Winston-Salem Dash News Release
FREDERICK, MD (MAY 6, 2010) - Brian Ward hit a two-run home run to cap a five-run seventh inning, lifting the Keys to a 5-4 comeback win over the Dash on Thursday afternoon at Harry Grove Stadium. Winston-Salem took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but Frederick rallied for its third one-run comeback win to capture the four-game series.
The Dash (18-9) pulled ahead 2-0 in the third against Keys starter Ryan O'Shea. Justin Greene walked and Brandon Short singled to lead off the inning. Both men advanced a base on Eduardo Escobar's sacrifice bunt and Greene scored on Ozzie Lewis' RBI single. Seth Loman brought in the second run with an RBI groundout to first to put the Dash up by two.
Winston-Salem doubled its lead with two outs in the seventh inning on Kyle Shelton's two-run single. Both the runs were unearned to Brett Jacobson (2-0) because of an earlier fielding error by Billy Rowell.
The 4-0 lead appeared safe with Nate Jones on the mound. The righthander was brilliant over the first six innings, yielding only a pair of infield singles and two walks.
However, Jones ran into trouble right away in the bottom of the seventh inning. L.J. Hoes and Joe Mahoney led off with back-to-back doubles. Hoes scored on Mahoney's hit to make it 4-1 Dash. Ronnie Welty followed with a run-scoring single to cut the deficit in half. Welty reached second base on the play, which ended Jones' outing.
Hector Santiago relieved Jones and retired the first two men he faced. Then Jacob Julius hit a pop-up to shallow left field that evaded three Dash players. Welty scored on the hit to make it 4-3 Winston.
Ward followed with a two-run homer to left-center field to catapult the Keys (16-11) into the lead for the first time all day. Frederick used a five-run fifth inning on Monday night to erase a 5-0 deficit, and on Thursday, a five-run inning put the Keys ahead. The outburst also ended a 19-inning scoreless streak for Frederick, dating back to the fourth inning on Tuesday when the Keys plated four.
Jose Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save to preserve the win.
Santiago (0-3) was charged with two runs in one inning and took his third loss.
During the game, Brandon Short went 2 for 5 to extend his 2010 professional baseball-best hitting streak to 24 games.
Winston-Salem lost just its second series of the year, dropping three of four games to the Keys. Frederick won by one run in all three of its victories, and came from behind in all three of the games as well.
The Dash returns to BB&T Ballpark on Friday, May 7 for a three-game series against the first-place Salem Red Sox. LHP Charlie Leesman (4-1, 4.56) seeks what would be his league-leading fifth win against Salem's LHP Fabian Williamson (3-1, 2.52). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the webcast pre-game show can be heard beginning a 6:45 on www.wsdash.com .
