Ward Drives Keys To 5-4 Win Over Dash

May 6, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release

Frederick scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning en route to a 5-4 win over the Winston-Salem Dash on Thursday afternoon. The five run seventh was the 21st inning this season that the Keys have scored three or more runs in. With the win, Frederick improved their record to 16-11 while Winston-Salem fell to 18-9.

Winston-Salem's starting pitcher, RHP Nate Jones, threw six scoreless innings but ran into a heap of trouble in the bottom of the seventh. Trailing 4-0, 2B L.J. Hoes led off the inning with a double to right-centerfield. 1B Joe Mahoney drove home Hoes with another double, this time to left-centerfield. RF Ronnie Welty hit a single to centerfield to bring home Mahoney to make it 4-2. Welty advanced to second on the throw. Following the Welty RBI single, LHP Hector Santiago relieved Nate Jones.

Jones allowed three runs on five hits over 6+ innings. He struck out five on the day.

After Santiago retired the first two batters he faced, DH Jacob Julius singled in Welty from second to cut the Dash lead to one. C Brian Ward was the next batter up for the Keys. Ward, who entered the 2010 season with one career home run, hit a deep shot to centerfield that just cleared the fence. The two-run blast gave the Keys a one-run lead they would not relinquish.

RHP Jose Duran pitched a scoreless eighth and RHP Jose Diaz closed out the game for his first save of the season.

Last week, the Keys were outscored by the Dash, 27-10, as Winston-Salem completed the three-game sweep at BB&T Field. This week was completely different. Frederick took three of four from the Dash and won all three games by one run. The Keys bullpen did no allow an earned run in 15 2/3 innings, during the four-game set.

The Wilmington Blue Rocks come to town Friday night for the start of a three-game series. LHP Nate Nery (1-2, 4.85) will start for the Keys while the Blue Rocks will pitch Silver Spring, MD native, Ivor Hodgson (2-1, 7.94). First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.

The first 1,000 fans to Friday night's will receive a Rubber Ducky courtesy of Precision Heating & Cooling. Friday night is also Carroll County Keys for Reading Night sponsored by HBP, Inc. and College Savings Plan of Maryland. Fireworks, presented by Precision Heating & Cooling, will follow the game.
