Frederick Keys News Release
Frederick methodically took a 3-0 lead in its first three trips to the plate on Wednesday night, but saw that advantage whittle away as Salem rallied sending Frederick to a 6-4 loss.
The Keys gained the lead with three consecutive two-out first inning hits from RF Ronnie Welty, 1B Joe Mahoney and 2B LJ Hoes. Hoes single drove home Welty to put Frederick atop 1-0.
In the second inning the Keys played small ball to score again. SS Greg Miclat walked, stole second base, went to third on a groundout by DH Bobby Stevens and scored on a sacrifice fly by C Luis Bernardo. The Keys led 2-0.
The speed of LF Kyle Hudson would play a factor in the Keys third run. Hudson singled and then stole second base. A throwing error on a pick-off attempt on the attempted steal allowed Hudson not only second but third base as well. He would score on a groundout by Welty.
But Salem rallied in the third inning when LF David Mailman launched his first home run of the year. The drive seemed to spark Salem who would score three runs to tie the game.
The Red Sox took the lead for good on a two-out, two-run double from C Tim Federowicz in the fifth inning. Federowicz drove home three runs in the game.
The Keys look to win the series Thursday, May 13th at 7:05 p.m. with Cole McCurry on the hill. Coverage will begin at 6:45 p.m. on The Keys Baseball Network from Salem, VA.
Frederick returns home for a week-long homestand Monday May 17th at 7:00 p.m. against the Potomac Nationals. It will be Kids Eat Free Monday at Harry Grove Stadium. For tickets contact the Keys Box Office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or online at frederickkeys.com.
