Salem RidgeYaks News Release

Salem, VA (May 12, 2010)- Tim Federowicz doubled in two runs with two outs in the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie and the Salem Red Sox defeated the visiting Frederick Keys 6-4 at Lewis-Gale Field Wednesday night, snapping their four game losing streak.

Federowicz was the star for Salem, as he finished with 3 RBI, including the two-run double with two outs in the fifth inning. The Sox catcher drove in his first run of the game with a two-out double in the third inning to tie the game at three.

Fabian Williamson started for Salem, and although he didn't have his best stuff, he was able to fight his way through five tough innings. Frederick scored in each of the first three innings, but couldn't find the big hit to extend their lead past 3-0 after three frames.

Salem awakened from its offensive slumber in the bottom of third inning, thanks to an unlikely candidate. The number nine hitter, David Mailman, drove an 0-2 pitch over the right field wall for his first home run of the season to open the flood gates for the Sox. Peter Hissey and Oscar Tejeda followed with back-to-back singles and Will Middlebrooks drove in Hissey with a sac fly for his 16th RBI of the season. After a Ryan Lavarnway walk, Federowicz delivered his first clutch two-out double of the night to drive in Tejeda and tie the game at three.

The score remained that way until Federowicz laced his two-out, two-run double off the left-center field wall to give Salem a 5-3 lead after six innings.

Frederick got within a run in the top of the seventh on a groundout by Xavier Avery, but the Keys stranded the tying run on third, as Jeremy Kehrt forced Hudson to ground out to end the frame.

Salem added an extra insurance run in the eighth inning, thanks to a bases loaded walk to Ryan Lavarnway to make it 6-4. Kehrt finished off his four-inning save by only allowing a walk in a scoreless ninth inning to seal the victory and end a four-game slide for the Sox.

Aside from Federowicz, Hissey was solid at the plate for Salem. The center fielder finished the night 4-for-5 with three runs scored, with two of the hits being bunt singles. Tejeda had a solid night as well, going 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored.

Williamson (4-1) got the win for the Sox, as he allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits in five innings of work. Kehrt picked up his third save of the season by working the final four innings, only giving up one run on three hits.

Nathan Nery (2-3) received the loss for Frederick, giving up five runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work. The Keys bullpen did a solid job in the final 4.1 innings, only allowing one run on two hits.

The Sox and Keys will meet in the series finale at Lewis-Gale Field on Thursday night. Caleb Clay gets the start for Salem, as Cole McCurry goes for Frederick. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
