Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (4-3, 39-38) can't say that they didn't have their chances on Friday night at Coastal Federal Field. Twice the Pelicans had the bases loaded, but were unable to score a run and the Frederick Keys (4-3, 30-46) did just enough on their end to hand the Birds a 2-0 loss in game two of the three-game series. All-Star pitcher Radhames Liz and a host of other Frederick pitchers combined to toss the shut out, which gave the Pelicans their second straight loss after they had won four of their first five games to start the second half.
Frederick used the longball to jump out to an early advantage in the top of the 2nd inning. The lead-off hitter in the 2nd, Keys DH Jason Fransz, belted a high drive over the left field fence, his Carolina League leading 13th homer of the year, which put the visitors up 1-0.
The Keys would tack on another run in the top of the 6th inning when 3B Tripper Johnson delivered an RBI single through the right side of the infield, scoring CF Nolan Reimold who led the frame off with a single up the middle. Johnson's third RBI of the series extended the Keys lead to 2-0, which is all that they would need on a night that their pitching staff held down the Pelicans.
The Pelicans had the bases loaded in the 1st and 5th inning, but Liz was able to pitch his way out of the two jams to preserve the shut out. Myrtle Beach stranded 10 runners on the base paths in the loss.
Pelicans starter Luis Atilano (L, 3-7) pitched well, but took the loss after giving up both Frederick runs on eight hits in six innings on the mound. Relievers Moises Hernandez and Michael Nix combined to toss three unblemished innings out of the pen. Liz (W, 6-4) notched the win thanks to five shut out innings in which he allowed six hits, walked two, and struck out two. The Keys used four relievers, Fredy Deza, Trent Baysinger, Casey Cahill, and closer Jim Hoey (S, 3) to toss the final four innings and they did it in scoreless fashion.
At the plate the Pelicans were led by LF Carl Loadenthal who went 2-4, and SS Jaime Trejo who finished the evening 2-4. 2B J.C. Holt extended his hitting streak to seven-straight games with a 1-5 effort. The Pelicans had eight hits total, but all of their hits were singles.
On Saturday night the Pelicans square off against the Keys in the series finale of the three-game set at 7:02 pm. It's the 3rd Annual Pops at the Park event with live music from the Liverpool Legends, a thrilling Independence Day style postgame fireworks show, plus Pelicans baseball.
