Keys Can't Hold Off Celebration
September 4, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
Frederick saw Wilmington celebrate a fourth consecutive playoff birth as the Blue Rocks defeated Frederick 5-2 to clinch the second half pennant in the Carolina League's North.
The Keys could not hold off the clincher against Eduardo Paulino who won his seventh straight decision. Paulino retired the first 13 Keys batters before Frederick began to fight back in the fifth inning.
Trailing 3-0, Caleb Joseph walked and went to second base on a singe to right field by Wally Crancer. The next pitch went to the screen allowing the runners to move up a base. Bobby Stevens then sent a deep fly to left field that scored Joseph and allowed Crancer to take third base when the throw came towards the plate. The next batter Billy Rowell lined a single up the middle to score Crancer bringing the Keys within, 3-2.
Frederick would get no closer though on a night in which they could only muster three hits.
Wilmington lengthened its lead in the sixth inning with back-to-back two out RBI-singles to go atop 5-2.
Frederick got another stellar 2 and 1/3rd innings of scoreless relief from Pat Egan who lowered his stellar ERA to 1.33
The series continues Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. from Frawley Stadium with coverage beginning with The UPS Store Pre-Game Show at 5:45 p.m. on The Keys Baseball Network.
