Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Carolina League has announced that outfielder Cody Johnson has been named a 2009 postseason all-star, and that Pelicans' athletic trainer Chas Miller has been named the League's athletic trainer of the year.

Johnson, who was recently promoted to Double-A Mississippi, finished his season in the Carolina League leading the way in home runs (32) and second in RBIs (84). He was voted in as the designated hitter just as he was at the mid-season break when he represented the Pelicans at the Carolina League-California League All-Star Game.

A first-round draft pick (26th overall) of the Atlanta Braves in 2006, Johnson was the Pelicans' lone representative named to the postseason all-star team. His 32 home runs set a new single-season franchise record, breaking the previous record of 23 set by Mike Hessman during the Pelicans inaugural season of 1999. Though playing in part of just one season, he ends his tenure with the Pelicans three home runs shy of the Pelicans' career record of 35 set by Isiah "KK" Ka'aihue in 2006 and 2007. Johnson was promoted to Mississippi on September, 1 during the Pelicans' final road trip of the 2009 season.

Miller's award was issued by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers' Society (PBATS). PBATS awards one trainer in each of the 16 Minor League Baseball leagues on an annual basis. Trainers of each team vote for the award in their respective league. Recipients of the award are honored for demonstrating hard work, dedication and professionalism while keeping their athletes healthy for the duration of a baseball season.

Miller is now eligible for the Minor League Athletic Trainer of the Year award voted on by the PBATS executive board. The national award will be awarded at the Major League Baseball Winter Meetings held in Indianapolis, IN on December 7-10, 2009.

Miller is in his first season with the Pelicans but has been a member of the Atlanta Braves training staff since 2006. He was with the Rome Braves in 2008 after spending his first two seasons in the organization with the Danville Braves. Prior to beginning his athletic training career, Miller earned his degree from West Virginia University and his master's in sports psychology from the University of Tennessee.

Only four games remain on the 2009 slate for the Birds. All four will take place at BB&T Coastal Field beginning with the series opener with the Winston-Salem Dash Friday night at 7:05. The first 1,000 paid fans through the gates will receive a free Pelicans hat as part of the final "Free Stuff Friday" of the season. The Inflatamaniacs will be on hand to entertain fans Saturday night and fireworks follow Sunday and Monday nights games.
