Salem Red Sox News Release

Salem, VA (September 4, 2009) - Mike Jones' RBI single gave Salem their first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh, and the Red Sox bullpen preserved the 3-2 final as Kyle Weiland won his fourth straight decision to improve to 7-9 for the year. With the win, the Sox move a game ahead of the Kinston Indians for the final playoff spot in the Southern Division with three games remaining in the regular season. Kinston fell 8-1 to Potomac at Pfitzner Stadium in Woodbridge, VA.

Salem had a multitude of chances off Hillcats starter Bryan Morris, but repeatedly left runners in scoring position as they were unable to muster the big inning. Seven of the nine runners that the Sox left on base were stranded in scoring position, but Brad Correll's RBI ground-out in the fifth tied the game at two before Jones' second hit of the night gave Salem a 3-2 edge in the seventh. Salem's first run of the evening came in the second inning when Chih-Hsien Chiang blasted an RBI double down the right-field line, plating Correll from second.

Weiland went seven strong for his second straight outing, yielding just two hits, two walks, and two runs. Weiland matched an inauspicious season-high by hitting three batters, but did not allow a hit after the second inning and struck out four. Jason Blackey struck out a pair in a scoreless inning of work before giving way to Derrick Loop. Making his return to Salem after four appearances for the Portland Sea Dogs in Double-A, Loop worked around a pair of two-out singles to earn the save, inducing a 6-4 force-out off the bat of Jose De Los Santos to end it in the top of the ninth. Loop also received some great defense in the ninth inning as Anthony Rizzo snared a screaming liner off the bat of Kris Watts to start the inning and Chiang made an impressive running catch on a deep drive from Jared Keel.

Jones, Chiang, and Zach Borowiak all finished with two hits and the Sox out-hit the cats 10-4. Jon Hee also contributed a hit and two walks, scoring two of the three Salem runs.

Morris absorbed the loss for Lynchburg, giving up ten hits in six and two-thirds inning, but holding Salem to just three runs. Harrison Bishop threw a scoreless inning and a third in relief, but the Cats stranded a pair in the ninth and the Sox hung on for victory.

With a one-game edge for the final playoff spot, the Red Sox play their final regular season home game at Lewis-Gale Field on Saturday night. Dave McKae gets the ball for Salem against Nate Adcock for Lynchburg, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05. Following Saturday's action, the series will conclude with ballgames on Sunday and Monday at City Stadium in Lynchburg.
