CarL1 Potomac Nationals

Nats Trounce Tribe 8-1 in Opener

September 4, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release

WOODBRIDGE, Va- Though the Potomac Nationals were officially eliminated from playoff contention after Wilmington's 5-3 victory over the Frederick Keys on Friday night, that did not stop the Nationals from putting a pounding on the Kinston Indians in game one of their final four-game set of the season, trouncing the Tribe 8-1 from Pfitzner Stadium.

The P-Nats busted out of the gates in a big way in the first two frames, plating two in the first and five more in the second inning.

After entering the bottom of the first down a run, the P-Nats snatched the lead back with a little bit extra when Devin Ivany blasted a long home run well over the wall in left-center field, his sixth of the year, to give Potomac a 2-1 advantage.

In the bottom of the second, the P-Nats broke the game wide open with five more runs off Kinston starter Chris Jones (1-1). The Nats loaded the bases with nobody out in the frame on two singles and a walk when Michael Martinez singled up the middle to drive in the third run of the game for Potomac. They continued the offensive onslaught an out later when two runs came around to score on a dropped catch error at home plate by Alex Castillo.

With runners on second and third, Ivany blasted another drive deep to left field, but the ball ricocheted off the wall to plate two more. On the night, Ivany went 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored.

Some outstanding middle relief from the Potomac bullpen strung a series of zeroes on the board from the second inning on, including an incredible three-inning outing from Luis Garcia. Garcia, recently acquired from the Los Angeles Dodgers for infielder Ronnie Belliard, did not allow a hit in his time on the mound, striking out five in the process.

On the night the P-Nats struck out 11 K-Tribe batters while allowing just a single unearned run on the evening. Though the P-Nats have officially been eliminated from playoff contention, there are still plenty of great promotions on the docket for Pfitzner Stadium in the final three games of the season.

Pfitzner Stadium is the place to be on the Saturday, September 5. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 ET, but the big ticket event taking place at the Pfitz on Saturday, September 5 is the Family Fun Fest presented by the Principal Financial Group! Everyone loves the spectacular free fan festival which will open just outside the ballpark three hours before game time.

The Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest features over 20 attractions including batting and pitching cages, bungee runs, super slides, bounce houses, a "Rookie Zone", a mobile video game arcade, a historic Minor League Baseball Museum, and you can even put yourself on a free souvenir Days Inn baseball card and Sports Illustrated for Kids magazine cover! Best of all, it's free! Remember, the Fun Fest begins three hours before game time, so be sure to come early to experience all it has to offer!

In addition to the game-used Potomac Nationals road jersey silent auction taking place until the top of the seventh inning, the Principal Financial Group Family Fun Fest, and the excitement of a pennant race for the final playoff spot in the Carolina League, the P-Nats will also be holding a spectacular fireworks extravaganza after the game, their final such spectacle of the 2009 regular season!

And as always, kids run the bases after the fireworks, and on every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday home game, courtesy of Glory Days Grill.
