Playoff Picture - Kinston and Salem both lost in extra innings last night, so Kinston and Salem are still tied for the final playoff spot with four games remaining. Kinston will play their final four games at Potomac, Salem will take on Lynchburg. Potomac comes into the series with a glimmer of playoff hope, they have to sweep Kinston and hope that Wilmington gets swept.
Steve Smith - joins the K-Tribe from Low A Lake County. Smith was 2-3 with a 2.36 ERA in 47 appearances as the Captains Closer. Smith was 26-for-28 in save opportunities, walking 12 and striking out 62 in 53 1/3 innings. He leaves the South Atlantic League tied for the league lead in saves and fifth in appearances. He was 1-1 with a 2.59 ERA in 16 appearances (two starts) for the Rookie Level GCL Indians last year. Smith is out of Oachita Baptist University.
OBP Brothers - Cord Phelps and Tim Fedroff continue to set the table from the top of the lineup. Phelps leads the Carolina League with 91 walks this season and has the second best on-base percentage at .384. Fedroff is tied for second in the CL in obp and tenth in the Carolina League with a .277 batting average.
All-Star Celebration - Speaking of Phelps and Fedroff, the duo was named to the Carolina League End of Season All-Star Team. Phelps was picked for second base and Fedroff as the utility outfielder. Former K-Triber Lonnie Chisenhall also made the list as a utility infielder, even though the North Carolina native was promoted to Double A Akron on August 8th. . Ole Cow - Ole Sheldon's 0-for-5 night last night ended some impressive streaks as his eight game hit streak, four straight multi-hit game streak, seven game RBI streak and six game run streak came crashing to a halt. Sheldon has now racked up fourteen RBI over the last five games.
An August to Remember - Kinston vaulted back into the playoff race with a 19-9 record, the second best in the CL in August. The K-Tribe also had the second best team batting average (.274) and ERA (3.07). Paolo Espino had the best ERA in the CL for the month with a 0.87 mark and was fifth in strikeouts (29), Russell Young was sixth with a 2.25 ERA. Tim Fedroff had the second best batting average in the CL for the month with a .343 average. Doug Pickens was close behind at fourth in the league with a .337 mark. Ole Sheldon was third in the CL with 23 RBI for the month.
