Kernels Suffer 6-3 Defeat to Snappers

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA -A four-run inning by the Snappers with two Cedar Rapids errors in the third allowed Beloit to take a 6-3 game from the Kernels at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday evening. Engelb Vielma crushed a triple in the first inning to bring in Jon Murphy and would later come around on an RBI-single by recently-activated Mitch Garver. Jason Kanzler also collected an RBI on a sacrifice fly that brought in Bryan Haar in the sixth. The Kernels saw three scoreless relief appearances by Alex Muren, Chris Mazza and Hudson Boyd. Beloit ended a ten-game losing streak with the three-run victory.

The Kernels started the scoring early with two runs in the bottom of the first. Engelb Vielma crushed his third triple of the season into the right field corner to bring in Jon Murphy and later scored on a Mitch Garver single to shallow right field to make it a 2-0 lead.

Jaycob Brugman responded for the Snappers in the top of the second with a solo homerun to left field to make it 2-1.

The Snappers added four in the top of the third on three hits and two errors by the Kernels defense. B.A. Vollmuth came across to tie the game when Chih-Fang Pan reached on a Bryan Haar error at third base. Luiz Baez and Phil Pohl tallied back-to-back RBI-doubles on two outs to make it a 5-2 lea for Beloit. On the Phil Pohl double-bagger, Kohl Stewart was ejected from the game by home plate umpire Brandon Butler.

Kohl Stewart (1-5) exited after 2 2/3 innings on the bump. The starter allowed five runs, one being earned, on four hits while striking out three batters.

Jared Wilson entered out of the dugout with two out in the third. Wilson allowed one run over 2 1/3 innings on the mound where he gave up two hits, walked four and struck out a pair.

Brugman struck again for Beloit in the top of the fourth by plating BJ Boyd on an RBI-single to right field. Brugman's second run-batted-in gave the Snappers a 6-2 advantage.

Beloit hurler Dylan Covey (5-6) finished following his third frame on the hill. Covey allowed two runs on two hits while striking out three and walking one in the winning effort.

Southpaw pitcher Matt Stalcup took the mound in the fourth for the Snappers. Stalcup threw four innings in relief and gave up one unearned run on one hit while walking and striking out two hitters.

Alex Muren toed the rubber to begin the sixth frame and tossed two innings of scoreless baseball.

Jason Kanzler cut the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI sacrifice fly that brought Bryan Haar in to make the score 6-3.

The Kernels went to their bullpen for the third time with Chris Mazza in the eighth. Mazza tossed one shutout inning where he allowed a single base-hit.

Sam Braggs made a one-inning appearance where he held the Kernels to no runs and no hits.

Hudson Boyd added a hitless, scoreless frame for the Kernels by shutting down the Snappers in order in the ninth along with one strikeout.

Bobby Wahl came to the bump in the bottom of the ninth and collected his first save of the year while striking out the side. Wahl secured the 6-3 victory for Beloit and ended their ten-game losing streak.

Cedar Rapids will finish the series against Beloit on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. It's a Run the Bases Sunday, sponsored by Planet X.
