
Kernels Split with Chiefs, 6-3 and 5-10

Peoria, IL - The Cedar Rapids Kernels split a doubleheader with the Peoria Chiefs on Wednesday night, winning the first game 6-3 and dropping the nightcap, 10-5. The doubleheader was scheduled to make up the second game of a DH rained out in Cedar Rapids on July 12.
In the first game, Buddy Boshers (3-0) threw a complete game, allowing three runs on eight hits and striking out seven. Michael Wing was 3-3 with 2 RBI; Randal Grichuk was 2-3 with a double and run scored; Matt Long went 1-4 with a double and RBI; and Jeremy Cruz was 2-4 with a double. Peoria starter Ryan Searle (6-7) took the loss as Justin Bour was 2-3 with a double and 2 RBI.
In the nightcap, the Chiefs roughed up spot starter Carson Andrew (1-1) for nine runs in the first inning although three Kernel errors made just two of those runs earned. Jeremy Cruz went 3-3 with a double and 3 RBI; Randal Grichuk was 3-4 with an RBI and Carlos Ramirez was 2-3 with two runs scored. Yeison Almeida worked four innings out of the Kernels bullpen, allowing a run on three hits and striking out four. Hak-Ju Lee was 2-4 with 2 RBI and Logan Watkins was 3-3 with three runs scored for the Chiefs. Reliever Luis Liria (1-0) picked up the win.
The Kernels and Chiefs continue their four game series on Thursday night from O'Brien Field in Peoria as Ariel Pena starts for the Kernels against Frank Batista for Peoria. The Kernels return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Wednesday, September 1 for the final three games of the regular season against the Burlington Bees.
