COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - The West Michigan Whitecaps (30-29; 56-72) scored six runs in the seventh inning to overtake the Lansing Lugnuts (28-31; 64-64), 10-6, rebuilding their two-game lead for the final Eastern Division playoff spot.
The Lugnuts blew leads of 2-0 and 5-3 in the game. The second West Michigan rally proved the decisive one.
Lansing reliever Brian Slover (3-7) faced five batters and recorded only one out in the fateful seventh, serving up an RBI double to Hernan Perez, an RBI single to Jeff Rowland, and an RBI double to Corey Jones before he was pulled in favor of Scott Gracey.
Gracey allowed a Tony Plagman sacrifice fly and back-to-back RBI singles to Avisail Garcia and Rob Brantly before finally escaping the inning.
Wade Gaynor added an RBI single against Gracey in the eighth to deliver West Michigan's tenth run of the game.
Antonio Cruz (2-0) captured the victory with three innings in relief for the Whitecaps, reached for just one run on a trio of Lugnuts singles with two outs in the ninth.
Lansing's offense collected 13 hits in the loss, three each by Sean Ochinko and Jon Del Campo.
In the 7:00 p.m. Friday rubber match of the three-game series, Lugnuts right-hander Drew Hutchison (0-1, 1.84) duels with Whitecaps right-hander Victor Larez (7-10, 4.42). 11 games remain in the regular season.
The final Lugnuts homestand will begin on Saturday, August 28th, with the 7:05 p.m. opener of a four-game series against the Dayton Dragons. LAFCU Fireworks will follow the game.
