South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks were held to just five hits on Thursday night, falling to the Dayton Dragons by a 3-1 final count. The loss will drop the team by a game to one of the two squads ahead of them in the standings as West Michigan and Lansing are battling it out in Grand Rapids.
The biggest bright spot for South Bend was starter Scottie Allen (ND), who returned to the mound for the first time since August 8th. Allen went 3.0 innings as he builds his arm strength back from some shoulder stiffness, allowing just one hit and no runs.
The Silver Hawks scored their only run in the game in the bottom of the second inning against Dayton starter Ricky Bowen (WP, 8-4). Ramon Castillo walked with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch, and then took third on a ground out. With two away, Victor Estevez chopped one slowly to first and beat the pitcher to the bag for the RBI single and the 1-0 lead.
Bowen didn't allow another run in the rest of his six innings and only allowed three hits total on the night. Jason Braun (ND) followed with two scoreless innings and Blaine Howell (SV, 2) pitched around two hits in the ninth for the save.
Dayton would score single runs in three different innings against reliever Diogenes Rosario (LP, 4-8). Rosario was moved back to the bullpen after struggling to a 1-6 record in the starting role, but had to settle for another loss in relief.
Mark Fleury doubled with one out in the fourth inning, stole third, and scored an unearned run on a Castillo fielding error at first base to tie the game at 1-1. Fleury tripled in the sixth inning, scoring on a Cameron Satterwhite sacrifice fly to give the Dragons a lead they would not relinquish.
Satterwhite added another sacrifice fly in the eighth, scoring Henry Rodriguez as an insurance run.
In addition to scoring the lone run, Castillo atoned for his error with two more hits, raising his average to .317 and pushing his current hitting streak to eight.
The Silver Hawks wrap up the home stand tomorrow on a Fireworks Friday at 6:30 PM Eastern Time. LHP Mike Belfiore (2-9, 3.81 ERA) will take the hill for South Bend against Dayton's RHP Jacob Johnson (7-6, 4.40 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 6:10 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com .
